What's installed on it? Oh, I guarantee there's some XP still out there. Oh, no, I hope not. I think someone said that in Discord the other day that they had some XP devices they were trying to upgrade. But you need to know what's online, what hasn't checked in. And so that's not just like, yes, we have 600 computers. Okay, so what operating system, what software is installed on it? So where PDQ is great here is that on our device page, we provide the full hardware inventory. So you can see the CPU, the disk drives, what drivers, what networking adapters are on there. Of course, the serial number of the device and the manufacturer model. So that's giving you a really good foot forward with your inventory. And then on the software page, we have what software, where it's installed, what versions installed, if it's outdated, which is extremely important, and any vulnerabilities that correlate with that. So we're hitting that identify piece really well.

TL;DR

  • Legacy operating systems like Windows XP remain active in some environments, posing serious and often overlooked security risks that IT teams must address proactively.
  • Knowing how many devices you have is not enough — administrators need granular visibility into OS versions, installed software, and hardware details for every machine.
  • PDQ's inventory tooling surfaces outdated software versions and correlates them with known vulnerabilities, directly supporting the identification phase of security management.

Summary

This short clip makes the case for comprehensive device and software inventory as a foundational security practice. The conversation opens with a candid acknowledgment that legacy operating systems like Windows XP are still present in real-world environments — a fact confirmed by community reports in PDQ's own Discord channel. The speakers emphasize that simply knowing a headcount of devices is insufficient; IT teams need to understand what operating systems are running, what software is installed, and whether any of it is outdated or vulnerable. PDQ's device page is highlighted as a solution, offering full hardware inventory including CPU details, disk drives, drivers, networking adapters, serial numbers, and manufacturer models. The software inventory view goes further, surfacing installed applications, version numbers, outdated software flags, and correlated vulnerability data. Together, these capabilities address the "identify" function of a security framework, giving administrators the visibility needed to act before vulnerabilities are exploited.
