So I start typing my little Markdown file. And then after a couple hours, I was like, oh my goodness, I'm going to need something much more. So then it's evolved a couple of times over the past five years. But now we move to a full Python stack back in the beginning of this year. And we have hands-on labs that are hosted on GitHub. We have verification systems. We have some AI stuff that's running to verify people's hands-on progress. We have the full curriculum, progress tracking. I just wrote another phase that includes everything that I know about interview prep, about whiteboarding, about being able to speak about yourself, having your own elevator pitch, going to networking events, everything that's helped me from like the get a job perspective. So I'm going to ship that at some point today. But yeah, it's an open source, free educational platform to learn the fundamentals of cloud engineering. And we have like close to 7,000 people now using it.

TL;DR

  • Learn to Cloud started as a single GitHub README file and evolved over five years into a full Python-stack educational platform with labs, AI verification, and progress tracking.
  • The platform is entirely free and open source, now serving close to 7,000 learners focused on cloud engineering fundamentals.
  • A newly added job-readiness phase covers interview prep, whiteboarding, elevator pitches, and networking — practical career guidance beyond technical skills.

Summary

This short feature tells the origin story of Learn to Cloud, a free, open source cloud engineering education platform that began as a single GitHub README file. The creator, known as GPS, describes how what started as a quick Markdown document five years ago grew through multiple iterations into a full Python-stack platform hosted on GitHub. Today it includes hands-on labs, AI-driven verification of learner progress, a complete curriculum, and progress tracking tools. The most recent addition is a job-readiness phase covering interview preparation, whiteboarding techniques, elevator pitches, and networking strategies — everything the creator credits with helping people actually land roles in tech. With nearly 7,000 active users, Learn to Cloud stands as a practical example of how an open GitHub repository can organically scale into a structured, community-serving educational resource without institutional backing or a price tag.

FAQ

What is Learn to Cloud and who is it for?

Learn to Cloud is a free, open source platform designed to teach cloud engineering fundamentals. It is aimed at developers and aspiring cloud engineers who want hands-on experience and structured guidance, including job-search preparation, without paying for a course or bootcamp.

How does the platform verify that learners are actually completing the labs?

The platform uses AI-driven verification systems to confirm hands-on lab progress, ensuring learners have genuinely completed exercises rather than simply self-reporting completion.
