Hi, my name is Michael Thielander, and I was one of the authors of the new book, ResOps, An Executive Guide. I think there are some concrete takeaways, and I'd kind of group them in people, process, and technology. In the people case, I would say own it. Really own the notion of ResOps, own sort of the spirit of ResOps and what it's trying to accomplish. Be a change agent for ResOps in your organization. And get alignment with other people. The second point is find your adjacent people, educate them, and bring them on. Under the process umbrella, there's a couple of points there too. Name your process in your organization. Name the process and get alignment. It could be NIST SP800-160. It could be the Gartner Cyber Resilience Framework. It could be the Commvault Framework, but name it and make it known within your organization. And then I think also under process, use that process. Make the job of that process should be to connect your people to your technology. It's not about buying new technology. Nobody's trying to convince anybody to add to their tech stack or add to their tools. It's about making the tools that you already have from backup and recovery to your cyber detection tools, your threat detection tools. Make them serve the job of resilience. Make them work towards this end of being continually resilient. That's kind of what my goal is, is people take away from this book.

TL;DR

  • ResOps co-author Michael Thelander frames resilience improvement around three pillars: people, process, and technology — each requiring deliberate organizational action.
  • Leaders should personally own the ResOps mission and serve as internal change agents, bringing adjacent teams and stakeholders into alignment around shared resilience goals.
  • Organizations should formally adopt and name a resilience framework — such as NIST SP800-160 or the Gartner Cyber Resilience Framework — and make it visible across the business.

Summary

In this short author segment, Michael Thelander — co-author of ResOps: An Executive Guide — distills the book's core lessons into a practical three-part framework built around people, process, and technology. On the people side, Thelander urges leaders to personally own the ResOps mission and act as internal change agents, actively educating adjacent stakeholders and building cross-functional alignment. Under the process pillar, he stresses the importance of formally naming a resilience framework within the organization — whether that is NIST SP800-160, the Gartner Cyber Resilience Framework, or Commvault's own model — and making it visible and actionable across teams. Critically, Thelander pushes back against the instinct to solve resilience gaps by purchasing new tools. Instead, he argues that organizations should focus on making their existing technology investments — from backup and recovery platforms to cyber and threat detection tools — work together in service of a unified resilience objective. The goal, he concludes, is continuous resilience: a state achieved not through tool accumulation but through disciplined alignment of people, process, and the capabilities already in place.

FAQ

What is ResOps and why does it matter for executives?

ResOps, or Resilience Operations, is a discipline that treats resilience as an ongoing operational practice rather than a one-time recovery plan. Thelander argues it matters because resilience is no longer optional — organizations must align people, process, and technology around a continuous resilience objective to remain viable.

Do organizations need to buy new tools to implement ResOps?

No. Thelander explicitly states that ResOps is not about adding to the tech stack. The focus is on making existing tools — including backup and recovery platforms and threat detection systems — serve the goal of resilience through better process alignment.
