Hello everyone, my name is Jed Wallace, Senior Technical Marketing Manager with Cohesity. In this video, we'll look at how Cohesity enables organizations to secure and protect their UGByteDB universe with Cohesity Smart Files, a service included in Cohesity Data Cloud. This approach seamlessly integrates immutable target storage using S3 and NFS protocols for enhanced data security and protection. But why? Cohesity organizations are using more data sources than ever across their IT estate. The world's largest enterprises trust Cohesity to keep pace and offer security and protection for their most important databases. With that said, let's dive into a demonstration. Cohesity Data Cloud administrators can quickly onboard UGByteDB universe data protection with two simple steps. In the first step, we need to prepare and configure Cohesity Smart Files to use either S3 or NFS as an immutable storage target. Here, if we click on Smart Files and then Views, we can see we already have a Smart Files view using S3 named S3 Test. Let's click on the view and then go to Settings. Cohesity recommends having Inline to Duplication and Inline Compression enabled on the storage domain in which you create the view. Optionally, you can enable the S3 object block for immutability if you want to use it with S3 object block enabled buckets. This will only work with version S3 views. To access Cohesity Smart Files S3 object servers as a backup storage, we would need to obtain an access key and a secret key from the S3 bucket owner. Access and secret keys are required to access the S3 bucket created on the Cohesity cluster. By going to Settings and then Access Management and clicking on the user which is used to create the S3 view, we would then copy the access key and the secret key. Let's transition over to the UGByte Anywhere user interface. Now the second step is to define a data protection policy in the UGByteDB universe, including a backup schedule and retention policy. To configure the S3 storage as a backup target for UGByteDB universe, we need to navigate to Integrations and then click Backup and click Create S3 Backup. But I'm going to go ahead and click Edit next to our existing provider configuration. Here in the configuration form, you'll need to fill out the required information such as the configuration name, the access key, access key secret, the S3 bucket, and the S3 bucket host base, which refers to the Cohesity cluster URL. Lastly, you would click Save, but in our case, I'm going to go ahead and click Cancel. Now we need to set up a scheduled backup policy by going to Dashboard and then click on the universe, and then click on Backups, and then select Scheduled Backup Policy. Next I'm going to go ahead and click Create Scheduled Backup Policy. Here I'm going to type in a policy name, and we'll select the API type, and then next we'll select the storage config we want to use for the backup, and then the database we want to use for this backup policy. So I'm going to go ahead and select Ugibyte. I'm going to leave all the rest of the defaults, and then I'm going to go ahead and click Create. Now let's go over to Backups. Here we can see the backup is completed successfully. Now that we have successfully backed up our Ugibyte DB universe data, let's perform a click restore by selecting a backup from the list, and then select Restore Entire Backup. Alternatively, if your backup includes incremental backups, you could restore a part of the incremental backup chain by selecting an increment from the list in the Backup Details view, and selecting Restore to this point. Here, we're going to go ahead and select the universe, and then we're going to go ahead and select Next after it's finished verifying, and now we're going to go ahead and assign a new name because we don't want to overwrite the existing database, and now we're going to go ahead and click Restore. The restoration will begin immediately, so when finished, we can go over to the Tasks over here on the dashboard. Now we can see over on the Tasks that the restore is completed successfully. So that's it for our demonstration. In this video, we showed how Cohesity enables organizations to secure and protect their Gigabyte DB universe with Cohesity Smart Files, and by using this approach, we can seamlessly integrate immutable target storage using S3 and NFS protocols for enhanced data security and protection. Thank you for watching, and have a great day.

TL;DR

  • Cohesity SmartFiles integrates with YugabyteDB Anywhere to provide immutable backup storage using S3 or NFS protocols with built-in deduplication and compression capabilities.
  • Configuration requires two simple steps: setting up SmartFiles views with access credentials on the Cohesity side, then defining backup policies and schedules within the YugabyteDB Anywhere interface.
  • The solution supports both full database restores and point-in-time recovery from incremental backup chains, enabling flexible recovery options for distributed SQL databases.

Summary

This technical demonstration walks through the complete process of protecting YugabyteDB universe data using Cohesity SmartFiles, a service included in Cohesity Data Cloud. Jed Wallace, Senior Technical Marketing Manager at Cohesity, shows how organizations can leverage immutable storage targets using S3 and NFS protocols to enhance data security and protection for distributed SQL databases. The demonstration covers the two-step onboarding process: first, configuring Cohesity SmartFiles with S3 or NFS as an immutable storage target with inline deduplication and compression enabled; second, defining backup policies within the YugabyteDB Anywhere interface including scheduling and retention settings. The video concludes with a practical restore demonstration, showing both full backup restoration and point-in-time recovery from incremental backup chains. This approach addresses the growing complexity of enterprise data estates where organizations manage an increasing number of diverse data sources and require consistent protection across modern database platforms.

FAQ

What protocols does Cohesity SmartFiles support for YugabyteDB backup?

Cohesity SmartFiles supports both S3 and NFS protocols as immutable storage targets for YugabyteDB universe backups, with inline deduplication and compression enabled on the storage domain.

Can I restore to a specific point in time from incremental backups?

Yes, if your backup includes incremental backups, you can restore to a specific point by selecting an increment from the backup chain in the Backup Details view and choosing 'Restore to this point' rather than restoring the entire backup.
