insurance agent, and that is seriously going to limit what guidance you can provide. You still are going to need to know what is in a policy and there's absolutely no substitute for reading a policy back to front, fine print and all. And since you're the IT professional in the room, chances are good you're going to understand the implications of the content of a policy in regards to the IT infrastructure and business processes that rely on that IT infrastructure better than your clients will. Use that knowledge to highlight deficiencies in their coverage so the client can make necessary adjustments with the insurance provider. As an example of when that expertise you bring in as an IT professional can come into play, the sublimits. You have that policy with a million dollars per year limit, but that whole one million isn't available as a payout for any covered event. There's going to be sublimits in there and that will specify that only $200,000 can be for assisting with data recovery from ransomware attack. And another $200,000 for negligent transmission of malware. Another $200,000 sublimit for business interruption, but with no coverage for cyber extortion. Those are all things that you are not going to know and figure out about a policy unless you read it. And this is another one of those opportunities for you to offer a service, but also to potentially get yourself in trouble. You know, it's always a, what's the risk exposure I am presenting by involving myself in a process. But because this does take time and it does take effort, somebody with a certain skill set needs to review that policy. There is an opportunity to engage with it as a project, but again, since you are not a licensed agent, you have to know and understand what the lines are you can't go through.

TL;DR

  • MSPs should read client cyber insurance policies thoroughly to understand coverage details, sublimits, and exclusions that clients may not fully comprehend
  • Sublimits often restrict payouts significantly below the total policy limit, with separate caps for ransomware recovery, malware transmission, and business interruption
  • Reviewing policies presents a billable service opportunity but requires careful boundary management since MSPs are not licensed insurance agents

Summary

This brief guidance addresses the importance of MSPs understanding their clients' cyber insurance policies despite not being licensed insurance agents. The speaker emphasizes that IT professionals are uniquely positioned to interpret policy language and technical requirements that clients may not fully grasp. By thoroughly reviewing insurance policies, MSPs can identify coverage gaps, understand sublimits that restrict payouts for specific incidents like ransomware recovery or business interruption, and help clients make informed decisions about their coverage. The presentation highlights both the service opportunity this creates and the need to maintain appropriate boundaries given the lack of insurance licensing. Understanding policy details enables MSPs to align their security and backup strategies with actual coverage limitations, ensuring clients aren't caught off-guard by sublimits that may cap ransomware recovery at amounts far below the policy's total limit.

FAQ

Can MSPs provide insurance advice to clients even though they're not licensed agents?

MSPs can review policies and highlight technical deficiencies or coverage gaps, but must avoid crossing into insurance advice that requires licensing. The focus should be on interpreting technical requirements and identifying how coverage aligns with IT infrastructure, not recommending specific policies or coverage amounts.
