to discovery and classification of data and everything that comes out there, it doesn't have to just always come in on the front end of it, right? It can also be a source of truth that can be used as a reflective point of information to say, hey, let's go back and take a look. We had 100 alerts occur across this time period against these points of data. What did we actually discover about that, and let's go and actually adapt to what was sitting out there. Can we create more laser-like focus in what's actually happening, or should we create a broader sphere of control around what those rules actually look like with the context from the data? And again, that's just where I come from in this space, because it's just not saying I found a piece of sensitive data. It's saying it's not a piece of sensitive data as it relates to a regulation or an individual, and you can taper in either direction so that if somebody maybe is going on leave or somebody is getting ready to leave the organization, so you're actually getting prepped to allow them to leave the organization, what kind of rules do you just automatically put around an individual to ensure you're protecting your data while allowing them to gracefully leave the organization? Or in the event of, say, something actually negatively happening, we want to make sure that we do get that addressed as well right away.

TL;DR

  • Data classification should serve as a living, reflective source of truth — not just a one-time discovery mechanism at the front end of a DLP workflow.
  • Security teams can use classification insights to review past alerts and adaptively refine DLP rules, either narrowing or broadening controls based on actual data context.
  • Context matters beyond simple sensitivity flags — understanding regulatory relevance and individual relationships enables more precise and actionable DLP decisions.

Summary

This short clip from a BigID webinar makes the case that data classification should function as a dynamic, reflective source of truth — not merely a front-end discovery tool. The speaker argues that when DLP alerts fire, security teams should be able to loop back through classification data to understand what was actually discovered, then adapt their rules accordingly. Rather than treating every flagged item as a confirmed threat, the approach emphasizes contextual refinement: tightening controls where precision is needed and broadening them where coverage gaps exist. A key practical example involves employee lifecycle events — such as an employee preparing to leave the organization — where automated, context-aware rules can protect sensitive data while still enabling a graceful offboarding process. The underlying message is that effective DLP is not simply about identifying sensitive data in isolation, but about understanding its regulatory relevance, its relationship to individuals, and the organizational context surrounding it. This positions BigID's classification capability as an intelligence layer that continuously improves DLP accuracy and reduces the noise of false positives over time.

FAQ

How does data classification help reduce DLP false positives?

By serving as a reflective source of truth, classification data allows security teams to review past alerts, understand what was actually discovered, and refine DLP rules to be more precise — reducing noise from irrelevant or misclassified alerts over time.
