moment. The trust is earned in that critical first 60 minutes, and that's what matters at the end of the day. And I think that's why I keep coming back to, and this is something Sam and I have both challenged each other on together, is it is the hardest thing to earn, but it takes seconds to lose, just like an incident. That mean time to detect, mean time to respond, you want it to be in seconds. And if it's not, your company is now being attacked in a faster fashion. And so it's, to me, it's very hand in hand. Yeah. Yeah. It's an interesting point. That trust factor alone cuts off an enormous amount of that propagation delay, right? I mean, I don't know, to use it, and that is so critical because every second does count. It's not just a euphemism, it's for real. And I was thinking about it, even though those first conversations that you all have with your clients are probably not easy, the ones you're making very proactively, even if those are difficult conversations, better to have that conversation, to your point, than the one that you'll have if you do not have it, and the trust erodes. That's a whole different animal.

TL;DR

  • Trust in cybersecurity partnerships is earned during critical incidents, particularly in the first 60 minutes of response, not during routine operations
  • The speed of incident response (mean time to detect and respond) must match the speed at which trust can be lost—both measured in seconds
  • Proactive, difficult conversations with clients build trust that reduces response delays and prevents threat propagation during actual attacks

Summary

This conversation explores the critical relationship between trust and incident response effectiveness in cybersecurity. The speakers emphasize that trust is earned during high-pressure moments—specifically the first 60 minutes of a security incident—rather than in routine operations. They draw parallels between the speed required in incident response (mean time to detect and respond) and the fragility of organizational trust, noting that both can be lost in seconds. The discussion highlights how proactive, difficult conversations with clients build the foundation of trust that becomes essential when responding to attacks, where every second of delay allows threats to propagate further through an organization's systems.

Key Quotes

0:00 "... that's the thing that Sam and I have always seen, is the trust is never earned in a boring moment. The trust is earned in that critical first 60 minutes, and that's what matters at the end of the day."
0:16 "... it is the hardest thing to earn, but it takes seconds to lose, just like an incident. That mean time to detect, mean time to respond, you want it to be in seconds."
0:38 "That trust factor alone cuts off an enormous amount of that propagation delay, right? I mean, I don't know, to use it, and that is so critical because every second does count."

FAQ

Why is the first 60 minutes of an incident so critical?

The first 60 minutes is when trust is truly tested and earned. During this window, the speed of response directly impacts how far an attack can propagate through systems. Organizations with established trust can respond faster, cutting off propagation delay and limiting damage.
