Yeah, and have those get some guardrails in place. I think from, like I said, to get a lot of those guardrails in place, like I said, it all starts with the data. Data is the fuel that is going to power the AI. I think ultimately from there, it's like I said, it's not just an inventory of your SaaS applications, your AI applications, inventory of your data, understanding the different levels of classifications, different types of data types associated within your ecosystem. That is ultimately the very foundation of what's going to make an AI security strategy very successful. And ultimately, as you're going through that, there's a lot of different things you can do surrounding that, right? I think one of the biggest problems from a data governance perspective is understanding retention, because I think looking at from a retention schedule, if you don't have set and automated retention policies across most of your data types that may contain sensitive information or may not, ultimately, we have to find a way to help automate that, right? So from a data governance perspective is how do we automate a lot of the data retention schedule, but also deletion of any redundant, obsolete or trivial data, right? Or ROT data. So being able to not only eliminate that, but you're essentially also shrinking the attack surface as well.

TL;DR

  • AI security strategy must start with comprehensive data discovery and classification across all SaaS and AI applications to understand what data fuels AI systems
  • Automated data retention policies are critical for managing sensitive information and ensuring compliance across diverse data types
  • Eliminating redundant, obsolete, and trivial (ROT) data through automated governance reduces attack surface while improving security posture

Summary

This brief discussion outlines foundational steps organizations should take to proactively defend against AI-related security risks. The speaker emphasizes that effective AI security begins with comprehensive data discovery and classification across SaaS and AI applications. Understanding what data exists, where it resides, and how it's classified forms the essential foundation for any AI security strategy. The conversation then shifts to data governance practices, particularly automated retention policies and the systematic elimination of redundant, obsolete, or trivial (ROT) data. By implementing these controls, organizations not only improve compliance and governance but also reduce their attack surface by minimizing the volume of data that could be exploited or exposed through AI systems.

FAQ

Why is data classification essential for AI security?

Data classification provides visibility into what types of sensitive information exist across your environment and where AI systems might access it. This understanding is the foundation for implementing appropriate security controls and guardrails around AI applications.
