We'll go to Veeam Backup for AWS External Repository Edition. We'll choose Data Cloud Vault. And here, we'll just add the repository name of our choice, and we'll hit Next. Now, we have to authorize the usage of it. So, it will authorize into our VDC Vault, choose the right subscription that we have. And then, we have to manage and authorize the right subscription or vault that we have and assign it to the relevant Veeam Backup and Replication that will coordinate with Veeam Backup for AWS for the right authentication and authorization to access that VDC Vault. So, once I assign it, I can go back to my Veeam Data Platform, and I will see the vault there. Then, I can hit Next. It will do some configuration, and then it will give me the ability to start. I'm going to use. It's predefined. And of course, immutability is predefined as per VDC Vault is always immutable. Now, I'll hit Next, and I'll be able to add encryption to that repository. Then, a couple of more, Next, and Apply, and the configuration is going to start building itself. And after a few seconds, we will have that completed and available within our Veeam Backup for AWS after it's been added through Veeam Backup and Replication. So now, let's go and verify that it's actually there. I will log into my Veeam Backup for AWS console, and I will go to Repositories. And in Repositories, I will be able to see that I have a new repository named Storage Vault, and it's available in Veeam Backup for AWS to be used as a repository for my Veeam Backup for AWS services that I would like to backup into S3.

TL;DR

  • VDC Vault can be added as an external repository in Veeam Backup for AWS through a guided wizard inside Veeam Backup and Replication.
  • Authorization requires selecting the correct VDC Vault subscription and assigning it to the relevant Veeam Backup and Replication instance for proper access control.
  • Immutability is always enabled by default on VDC Vault, protecting backups from ransomware, accidental deletion, and insider threats without any manual configuration.

Summary

This short walkthrough demonstrates how to configure Veeam Data Cloud (VDC) Vault as an external repository within Veeam Backup for AWS, providing an off-site, immutable backup target for AWS workloads. Roy Adiel guides viewers through the complete setup process: navigating to the External Repository section, selecting Data Cloud Vault as the repository type, naming the repository, and authorizing the correct VDC Vault subscription. A key step involves linking the vault to the appropriate Veeam Backup and Replication instance, which coordinates authentication and authorization between the two products. Once assigned, the vault appears in the Veeam Data Platform and can be advanced through the configuration wizard. Immutability is enabled by default — VDC Vault is always immutable, requiring no manual toggle — and optional encryption can be added before finalizing. After the configuration completes, the new repository is immediately visible in the Veeam Backup for AWS console under Repositories, ready to serve as an S3-backed destination for AWS backup jobs. The entire process takes only a few minutes and requires no external tooling or console switching.

Key Quotes

1:33 "Immutability is predefined as per VDC Vault is always immutable."
0:52 "Assign it to the relevant Veeam Backup and Replication that will coordinate with Veeam Backup for AWS for the right authentication and authorization to access that VDC Vault."
2:27 "I will be able to see that I have a new repository named Storage Vault, and it's available in Veeam Backup for AWS to be used as a repository for my Veeam Backup for AWS services."

FAQ

Is immutability something I need to configure manually when adding VDC Vault?

No. Immutability is predefined and always enabled on VDC Vault — it is enforced by default and requires no manual setup during the repository configuration wizard.

Do I need to switch between multiple consoles to complete this setup?

No. The entire configuration is handled within Veeam Backup and Replication, which coordinates authentication and authorization with Veeam Backup for AWS. The new repository then appears automatically in the Veeam Backup for AWS console.
