manual tasks. But as AI agents connect to more systems, a question arises. What exactly is an AI agent allowed to do? An agent persona defines the job description of an AI agent. It determines which systems the agent can access, what data it can retrieve, and what actions it is allowed to perform. This ensures that AI agents operate within a controlled scope aligned with their intended purpose. Let's look at a common enterprise workflow. A sales representative is preparing for a meeting with a customer and wants the account's history and recent interactions. Instead of navigating multiple systems, the rep asks the AI assistant, summarize the customer account history for Acme Manufacturing, and highlight recent interactions. To complete this task, the AI agent retrieves information from multiple systems, including Salesforce, email, and customer records. Without agent personas, the agent operates with the full set of permissions granted to its user. In most cases, it doesn't need access to all of these systems or actions. This introduces unnecessary complexity, increases cost, magnifies risk, and can even slow the agent down. Now let's see how we create an agent persona in the Sequence AI Gateway. We start by creating a new agent persona and giving it a job description in plain English. No need to pick individual tools, the AI Gateway does that for us. At this stage, we can either use the AI Gateway's recommendations or modify them as needed. We then configure authentication and complete the setup. Only the required tools are enabled, nothing unnecessary. Now let's see how this agent persona works in practice. When a request is made, the Gateway evaluates the request against the permissions defined in the persona. When the request aligns with the allowed access, the Gateway approves it, and the agent retrieves the required data. But if the agent attempts to perform an action outside its permissions, the request is denied. Agent personas in the Sequence AI Gateway provide a structured way to define and enforce what AI agents can access and execute based on a simple job description in plain English. By combining identity, permissions, and policy enforcement, organizations can securely enable AI-driven workflows across enterprise systems.

TL;DR

  • Agent Personas define AI agent permissions by specifying allowed systems, data access, and actions through plain English job descriptions rather than manual tool selection.
  • The AI Gateway automatically evaluates every agent request in real time, approving actions within defined permissions and blocking unauthorized attempts to access systems or data.
  • Organizations can implement least-privilege access for AI agents, reducing security risk and operational complexity while enabling efficient AI-driven workflows across enterprise systems.

Summary

This demonstration introduces Cequence's approach to controlling AI agent permissions through Agent Personas in their AI Gateway platform. The video addresses a critical challenge as organizations deploy AI assistants: defining and enforcing what these agents are allowed to access and execute across enterprise systems. Using a sales representative workflow as an example, the demonstration shows how Agent Personas function as job descriptions for AI agents, specifying which systems they can access, what data they can retrieve, and what actions they can perform. The solution aims to reduce risk, complexity, and cost by implementing least-privilege access controls that limit agents to only the permissions required for their intended purpose, while automatically evaluating and blocking unauthorized requests in real time.

FAQ

What is an Agent Persona in the Cequence AI Gateway?

An Agent Persona is essentially a job description for an AI agent that defines which systems it can access, what data it can retrieve, and what actions it is allowed to perform. It ensures AI agents operate within a controlled scope aligned with their intended purpose, implementing least-privilege access controls.

How does the AI Gateway enforce agent permissions in real time?

When an AI agent makes a request, the Gateway evaluates it against the permissions defined in the agent's persona. If the request aligns with allowed access, the Gateway approves it and the agent proceeds. If the agent attempts to perform an action outside its permissions, the request is automatically denied.
