In today's BEAM V-13 Complete Attack Part 12, I will explain about the R-back. In V-13, you can now create custom roles in addition to the conventional fixed roles. This allows you to allow only specific job operations and listservs, and you can now set up the necessary rights as soon as you start operating. Now, let's take a look at what you can do with custom roles. Select User & Roles. Select the Roles tab and click Add. Under the Roles tab, you can see Permissions, Manage Backups, and Manage Listservs. By enabling Manage Backups, you can create and manage your own backup jobs. By enabling Manage Listservs, you can create and manage your own backup jobs. Next, select the Inventory. Select the Inventory as a whole or the Workload. This time, I will select a specific machine in vSphere. Select the Workload. Select the Workload as a whole or the Workload. Select the Workload. This time, I will select Coba Test 2 as a backup. Next, I will explain about the Depository. Select the Depository as a whole or the Workload. This time, I will select the Workload as a backup. Next, I will explain about the Listservs. Select the Listservs as a backup. Select the Listservs as a backup. This time, I will select the Listservs as a backup. Next, I will explain about the Listserv Options. You can set the options for all the Listservs. For example, you can set Instant Recovery. You can also set the option to allow only VMware-only Listservs. This time, I will set it to allow only VMware-only Listservs. Next, I will explain about the VBR List. Select the VBR List as a target. Select the VBR List as a target. This time, I will select the VBR List as a target. Now, I have created the role. I will assign the role to the user. I will assign the role to the user. Now, I have created the role. Now, I will log in as a VMtest user. I have logged in as a VMtest user. As you can see, the user has not created a backup job. As you can see, the user has not created a backup job. The Listservs are also not displayed. The Listservs are also not displayed. Now, I will create a job. Now, I will create a job. I have created a job. I will create a job. I will create a job. I will create a job. I have assigned the job to the user. I have assigned the job to the user. I will create a backup job. I will create a backup job. I have created a backup job. I have created a backup job. I have created a backup job. I will log in as a VMtest user. I will log in as a VMtest user. I've already set up the VM, so I will only enable the option for the restore. so I will only enable the option for the restore. so I will only enable the option for the restore. Restore Entire VM is the only option I have. I will select this option. I've selected the original location for the restore, but you can see that only the original location is displayed. This is the end of the explanation of RBAC. This is the end of the explanation of RBAC.

TL;DR

  • Veeam v13 introduces custom role-based access control (RBAC) that allows administrators to create granular permission sets beyond the traditional fixed roles available in previous versions.
  • Custom roles enable precise control over backup job management, inventory access, repository selection, and restore operations, allowing organizations to implement least-privilege access principles tailored to specific operational needs.
  • The demonstration shows how to create a custom role that restricts a user to managing backups for specific virtual machines and limits restore capabilities to VMware-only operations at original locations.
  • When users log in with custom roles, the Veeam interface dynamically reflects their permissions, displaying only authorized resources and available operations based on their assigned role configuration.

Custom Role Creation and Granular Permissions

Veeam v13 introduces custom role-based access control (RBAC) capabilities that extend beyond the traditional fixed roles available in previous versions. Administrators can now create custom roles with granular permissions that control specific job operations and restore capabilities. The demonstration walks through the process of creating a custom role by selecting permissions for backup management, inventory access, repository selection, and restore options. The presenter shows how to configure a role that allows a user to manage backups for specific vSphere virtual machines while restricting restore operations to VMware-only restores at the original location. This level of granularity enables organizations to implement least-privilege access principles, ensuring users have only the permissions necessary for their operational responsibilities.

Practical Implementation and User Experience

The tutorial demonstrates the end-to-end implementation of custom RBAC by creating a test role and assigning it to a user account. When logging in as the restricted user, the interface reflects the configured permissions—only authorized virtual machines appear in the inventory, and restore options are limited to the specifically enabled capabilities. The demonstration shows that the user can create backup jobs only for the designated VM (Coba Test 2) and can perform restores exclusively using the Restore Entire VM option to the original location. This practical walkthrough illustrates how Veeam v13's RBAC implementation provides administrators with precise control over user capabilities while maintaining a straightforward user experience for those operating within their assigned permissions.

FAQ

What is the main advantage of custom roles in Veeam v13 compared to previous versions?

Custom roles in Veeam v13 allow administrators to create granular permission sets tailored to specific operational needs, moving beyond the fixed roles of previous versions. This enables precise control over which users can manage specific backup jobs, access particular virtual machines, use designated repositories, and perform limited restore operations, implementing true least-privilege access principles.

How does the user interface change when logging in with a custom role?

When a user logs in with a custom role, the Veeam interface dynamically reflects their assigned permissions. Only authorized virtual machines appear in the inventory, backup job creation is limited to permitted resources, and restore options are restricted to specifically enabled capabilities. This creates a simplified, focused user experience that prevents unauthorized access while maintaining operational efficiency.
