SolarWinds is the tool that we use for all of our infrastructure monitoring across a very diverse regional network that spans two states. It does so much more than monitoring up and down. A lot of our engineers, they didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night if they didn't have physical access to a location. So what we did is we suppressed those messages and still tracked the data, and if the node came back up, of course that would be detected by SolarWinds, but we could dispatch resources closer to opening hours or business hours to restore connections that had been lost. SolarWinds has given us the ability to really have a deep dive into our network infrastructure. Historically, our biggest problem is when end users experience any sort of issues, the first thing that they do is blame the network. But SolarWinds had provided us insight into ruling that out. It went a long way for the business to be able to say definitively that we are not experiencing a network issue. You can really look at the infrastructure in ways that will benefit the business, making smart decisions with data, and SolarWinds provides us data to do that, to make those smart decisions.

TL;DR

  • SolarWinds monitors diverse infrastructure across St. Luke's two-state healthcare network, providing visibility beyond basic up/down status
  • Intelligent alert suppression allows engineers to avoid unnecessary overnight calls while still tracking issues for business-hours resolution
  • Deep network insights enable IT to definitively rule out network problems when users report issues, improving business confidence in infrastructure reliability

Summary

Jason Early from St. Luke's University Health Network describes how SolarWinds enables comprehensive infrastructure monitoring across their multi-state regional healthcare network. The platform goes beyond basic up/down monitoring to provide intelligent alerting that allows engineers to suppress non-critical overnight notifications while still tracking data, enabling resource dispatch during business hours when physical access is available. This approach has transformed their operational efficiency by providing deep visibility into network infrastructure, allowing the IT team to definitively rule out network issues when end users report problems — a capability that has significantly improved business confidence in the network's reliability. The data-driven insights from SolarWinds empower the organization to make informed infrastructure decisions based on actual performance metrics rather than assumptions.

FAQ

How does SolarWinds help reduce unnecessary after-hours support calls?

SolarWinds allows St. Luke's to suppress non-critical alerts for locations where engineers lack physical access, while still tracking all data. If a node recovers on its own, SolarWinds detects it automatically. For issues requiring intervention, resources can be dispatched during business hours rather than waking engineers overnight.
