When I actually started with Commvault, it was in 2002, and it actually came out in three-and-a-half-inch floppies. So I've got a lot of breadth of knowledge in the product. Arleigh is an interesting development in the Commvault evolution. I was encouraged by our team in the early days to start using Arleigh, because the product now is so wide and deep that no one person can know everything. So using Arleigh with the appropriate prompts is a great tool. Find out what you don't know, but is available out there to you. Previously, I would immediately go to logs to look for issues. Now, and then I would follow that up with reviewing the documentation. Now, I would go straight to Arleigh and, with an appropriate prompt, get more quickly to the nitty-gritty of where the issue is, whether it is a known issue and known workarounds, which in many cases actually allow me to rectify an issue very quickly. The one feature for Arleigh that I really like is the ability to develop dynamic documentation. I have transitioned to start having a library of Arleigh prompts and using that to dynamically generate my documentation. It can provide a checklist that I can provide to end users who are actually installing the base software, and then once it's docked into Commvault, I can then remotely manage it. Using Arleigh has enabled me to increase the rate that I am solving issues and not having to log support calls with Commvault support. This has benefited my customers in that I can then return the backup to service as soon as possible. Arleigh is a very powerful tool, but like any tool, it's very important that you put in appropriate prompts. You ask open questions and provide the relevant information. If you do that, then Arleigh will provide a very detailed and rich response that nine times out of ten will solve your issue without having to pursue any further steps.

TL;DR

  • Arlie replaces manual log analysis with AI-driven insights, enabling faster identification of backup issues and known workarounds without extensive documentation review.
  • Building reusable prompt libraries allows consistent troubleshooting workflows and dynamic documentation generation tailored to specific deployment scenarios.
  • Reduced support ticket dependency and faster issue resolution translate directly to improved backup service recovery times for end users.

Summary

Phil Smith, a Commvault veteran with over 20 years of platform experience dating back to the 2002 floppy disk release, shares how Commvault's AI assistant Arlie has transformed his troubleshooting workflow. As backup environments have grown increasingly complex, Smith explains how Arlie enables him to bypass traditional manual log analysis and documentation review, instead using targeted prompts to quickly identify issues, surface known fixes, and generate actionable insights. He highlights the shift from reactive troubleshooting to proactive problem-solving through reusable prompt libraries and dynamic documentation generation. This AI-driven approach has reduced his reliance on support tickets, accelerated issue resolution, and improved service delivery to end users. Smith emphasizes that while Arlie is powerful, its effectiveness depends on crafting appropriate prompts with relevant context and open-ended questions to generate detailed, actionable responses.

FAQ

How does Arlie change the traditional troubleshooting workflow for backup administrators?

Instead of starting with manual log analysis and documentation review, administrators can use targeted prompts to quickly identify issues, known fixes, and workarounds, significantly reducing time to resolution.

What makes an effective Arlie prompt according to experienced users?

Effective prompts are open-ended questions that provide relevant context and specific information about the environment or issue, enabling Arlie to generate detailed, actionable responses that solve problems without further escalation.
