of Day, Host Name, Host IP Address, Domain Name, and Wealth Format Tags in message text. Using this feature eliminates the need to use filters and actions to split incoming messages into multiple log files. Go to File, Setup, and click on Log to File under Actions. In the field that displays the path and file name, you can place the cursor wherever you want to insert the new value and then click Insert Auto-Split Value. Now, choose how you wish to split the log files, whether by date, time, priority, input source, host IP, host name, message text, or custom fields. For example, let's insert the host IP address into the path and the date into the file name and click OK. Now Kiwi Syslog Server will create separate folders for each IP and a log file for each day. For more information on Kiwi Syslog Server, contact kiwisales at solarwinds.com.

TL;DR

  • Kiwi Syslog Server can automatically split log files by priority, time, hostname, IP address, domain, or message text without requiring custom filters
  • Configuration is done through File > Setup > Log to File, where auto-split values can be inserted into file paths and names
  • Example implementation creates separate folders per IP address with individual log files for each day, streamlining troubleshooting and log management

Summary

This tutorial demonstrates how to configure automatic log file splitting in Kiwi Syslog Server, eliminating the need for manual sorting or complex filter configurations. The feature allows administrators to automatically organize incoming syslog messages into separate files and folders based on multiple criteria including priority level, time of day, hostname, IP address, domain name, and specific message text patterns. The demonstration walks through the configuration interface, showing how to insert auto-split values into file paths and names. By implementing this capability, IT teams can create organized storage structures—such as separate folders for each IP address with daily log files—that significantly streamline troubleshooting workflows and reduce the time spent searching through consolidated log data. This approach provides a more efficient alternative to building custom filters and actions for log file management.

FAQ

What criteria can I use to automatically split log files in Kiwi Syslog Server?

You can split log files by priority, time of day, hostname, host IP address, domain name, and custom fields or message text patterns. These values can be inserted into both the file path (for folder organization) and file name (for individual log files).
