Go to File, Setup, and click DNS Resolution. Now enable the checkboxes Resolve the IP address of the sending device and Resolve IP addresses within the message text. Expand DNS Resolution, go to DNS Caching, and enable Preload the cache with static entries from a host file. Browse for the file called statichost.txt and edit that as a text file. Here you can add the IP address of the source device sending the Syslog messages and the corresponding hostname that you wish to see. The IP address and the hostname must be separated with a tab. A space is not recognized as a valid separator. Select this host file in the DNS Caching screen in Kiwi. Return to the monitoring console and you will see the hostname field being populated with the customized hostname. Kiwi Syslog Server simplifies Syslog monitoring and provides you with a host of customization and administration options. For more information on Kiwi Syslog Server, contact kiwisales at solarwinds.com.

TL;DR

  • Kiwi Syslog Server can convert IP addresses in syslog messages to custom hostnames through DNS resolution configuration, making log tracking more intuitive.
  • Configuration requires enabling DNS resolution options and setting up a static host file (statichost.txt) with tab-separated IP-to-hostname mappings.
  • The feature works for both the sending device IP address and IP addresses found within the message text itself.

Summary

This tutorial demonstrates how to configure custom DNS resolution in Kiwi Syslog Server to convert IP addresses in syslog messages to customized hostnames. The process involves enabling DNS resolution settings, configuring DNS caching with a static host file, and properly formatting IP-to-hostname mappings using tab separators. This capability simplifies log tracking by replacing numeric IP addresses with meaningful hostnames in both the device source field and within message text. The configuration is performed through the File menu Setup interface and requires editing a statichost.txt file with the desired IP-to-hostname mappings. Once configured, the monitoring console displays the customized hostnames, making syslog monitoring more intuitive and easier to manage for network administrators.

Key Quotes

0:00 "Kiwi Syslog Server provides the ability to convert the IP addresses of Syslog messages to a customized hostname, making it easier to track logs."
0:42 "The IP address and the hostname must be separated with a tab. A space is not recognized as a valid separator."

FAQ

What separator must be used between IP addresses and hostnames in the static host file?

A tab character must be used to separate the IP address and hostname in the statichost.txt file. Spaces are not recognized as valid separators and will prevent the configuration from working properly.
