I work for a company called Pharmalytic, which is a business intelligence platform for pharmacies, and I'm a systems administrator there. We use observability, both SAS and self-hosted. One of the biggest advantages of having both is that you can see the network collector and its data from the self-hosted in the SAS dashboards. So it makes it really convenient to have sort of one source of truth for all of our monitoring and alerting that's done through SolarWinds. My experience with SolarWinds so far has been you can use it to do really simple things and it'll be easy to do, but if you dig in and you ask questions and you get resources, you get help, then suddenly you realize that SolarWinds has all this potential that a lot of people who are using SolarWinds probably don't even know. It's easy to set up and start using out of the box, but you can get as granular and detail-oriented with your monitoring and alerting, and then on top of that with the new products that SolarWinds has, you can implement things like runbooks and make your responses more efficient, not just your alerts. You can really start to maximize the potential of the product by getting more detail-oriented with your alerting and your monitoring and getting more granular about problem solving and troubleshooting. I'm excited to learn more about how to use SolarWinds and to start making our SolarWinds deployment more complete.

TL;DR

  • Pharmalytic uses a hybrid SolarWinds deployment combining SaaS and self-hosted observability to achieve unified monitoring across their pharmacy business intelligence platform infrastructure.
  • The hybrid approach enables network collector data from self-hosted components to appear in SaaS dashboards, creating a single source of truth for all monitoring and alerting activities.
  • SolarWinds offers both immediate value with simple out-of-the-box setup and advanced capabilities including granular monitoring, detailed alerting configurations, and automated runbook-driven incident response for organizations ready to maximize the platform.

Summary

Dan, a systems administrator at Pharmalytic, a business intelligence platform for pharmacies, shares his experience implementing SolarWinds observability in a hybrid deployment model combining both SaaS and self-hosted components. He highlights the strategic advantage of unified visibility, where network collector data from self-hosted infrastructure appears alongside SaaS dashboards to create a single source of truth for monitoring and alerting. Dan emphasizes SolarWinds' dual nature: accessible enough for immediate deployment with out-of-the-box functionality, yet powerful enough to support advanced use cases like granular alerting, detailed monitoring configurations, and automated response workflows through runbooks. His testimony reflects a journey from basic implementation to discovering the platform's deeper capabilities through exploration and engagement with SolarWinds resources, positioning the solution as scalable for organizations at different maturity levels.

FAQ

What are the benefits of using both SaaS and self-hosted SolarWinds observability together?

The hybrid approach allows you to see network collector data from self-hosted infrastructure directly in SaaS dashboards, creating a unified monitoring experience and single source of truth for all alerting and observability data across your environment.

How difficult is it to get started with SolarWinds observability?

SolarWinds is designed for easy initial deployment with out-of-the-box functionality that works immediately, but the platform also supports advanced configurations including granular monitoring, detailed alerting, and automated runbook responses as you explore its deeper capabilities.
