customers, it was time for an upgrade. We started our network automation journey in 2022 with the intent of currencying over 1,200 branches in the U.S. But upgrades to infrastructure are complex. When you think about all of the components inside a branch, we had to have very tight windows. And I'm talking maybe nine until 11 o'clock. We were never going to be able to do this scope and we were going to burn people out unless we automated each and every one of those individual actions. That's where TD turned to Red Hat for help. So Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform has become foundational for how TD does network automation, streamlining the way that we're automating things like network upgrades. As a small automation team, we use AI-assisted development to speed up our work. Night after night, we see our automation come to life. When infrastructure is working the way it's supposed to be, it's invisible. That infrastructure opened the door for even greater efficiency. With that foundation in place, it truly allowed us to go to advanced provisioning use cases like changing templates within branch configurations, rolling out new campuses at speed with automation. We now have over 100 playbooks that allow us to enact change and truly touch all of our portfolio from an automation perspective. So how did automation help the TD IT team avoid working long nights? Every day, we will be able to close the change in one and a half to two hours. We started at two, we went to four, and then we went to eight. And then eventually we were doing 20 to 24 retail locations every night. At TD, our focus is more human. How we are executing for the business from a technology perspective drives customer outcomes, drives banking outcomes, and only provides a more enriched experience for our customers.

TL;DR

  • TD Bank automated network upgrades across 1,200+ U.S. branches using Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, eliminating overnight maintenance marathons for IT teams.
  • The automation initiative scaled from 2 branches per night to 20-24 locations, reducing change windows from all-night sessions to 1.5-2 hours per deployment.
  • TD's small automation team built over 100 playbooks using AI-assisted development, enabling advanced provisioning and rapid campus rollouts across their entire network portfolio.

Summary

TD Bank faced a significant infrastructure challenge: upgrading network devices across over 1,200 U.S. branches while maintaining tight maintenance windows and avoiding IT team burnout. The bank implemented Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform starting in 2022 to automate complex network upgrades that previously required manual intervention during limited overnight windows. The automation initiative transformed their operations from handling 2 branches per night to 20-24 locations, reducing change windows from potentially all-night sessions to 1.5-2 hours. The small automation team leveraged AI-assisted development to build over 100 playbooks covering their entire network portfolio, enabling advanced use cases like template changes and rapid campus deployments. This foundational automation approach allowed TD to maintain invisible, reliable infrastructure while improving both operational efficiency and customer banking experiences across their retail network.

FAQ

How did TD Bank reduce the time required for network upgrades?

TD implemented Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to automate individual actions during network upgrades, reducing change windows from potentially all-night sessions to 1.5-2 hours. This automation allowed them to scale from 2 branches per night to 20-24 locations while maintaining tight maintenance windows.

What advanced capabilities did TD unlock after establishing their automation foundation?

Beyond basic network upgrades, TD's automation foundation enabled advanced use cases including changing templates within branch configurations, rolling out new campuses at speed, and managing their entire network portfolio through over 100 playbooks built by a small automation team.
