can remember? One was a person who said that their Wi-Fi didn't work. And I was like, wait, how is that? So I asked and she said, yeah, I did this, I tried this. I was like, I'm at a loss here. And then I started Googling the model, looked at the pictures of all sides. And then when I caught the Wi-Fi switch, I was like, no, you're kidding me. Come on. Yeah. Can you turn on this? Come on. Can you turn on that switch there, exactly on the right side? Hey, my Wi-Fi works. Dude, like nine times out of 10, whenever I got a user that called me and said their Wi-Fi was not working, it was the dang dedicated button on a keyboard. And it was like, it was up there by the function key, the F keys, you know, and they would just accidentally disable their Wi-Fi and they're like, hey, that's not working. Or sometimes it was also, there was like the trackpad buttons and they would hit the trackpad button and it would disable the trackpad and they're like, oh, my laptop's not working anymore, you know? And it's these dang buttons. I wish the like manufacturers just wouldn't put those on there because they're just foot guns for our users.

TL;DR

  • A classic IT support ticket is resolved when a hidden physical Wi-Fi toggle switch on the side of a laptop turns out to be the culprit behind a connectivity complaint.
  • Dedicated Wi-Fi disable keys near the function row on laptop keyboards are a frequent source of accidental disconnections that users cannot self-diagnose.
  • IT pros argue that hardware shortcut buttons — for Wi-Fi and trackpads alike — create more helpdesk burden than they're worth, calling them 'foot guns for users.'

Summary

This short clip features IT support professionals swapping war stories about one of the most deceptively simple — and surprisingly common — helpdesk tickets: Wi-Fi that isn't working because of a physical switch or hardware button the user accidentally toggled. One speaker recounts methodically troubleshooting a connectivity complaint, eventually Googling the laptop model to examine every side of the device before spotting a dedicated Wi-Fi toggle switch. The fix was instant once the user flipped it back on. A second speaker chimes in with a related pattern: laptop keyboards often include a dedicated Wi-Fi disable key near the function row, which users hit accidentally and then can't explain why their internet stopped working. The same problem crops up with trackpad disable buttons. Both speakers agree that these hardware shortcuts — while perhaps well-intentioned by manufacturers — consistently create unnecessary support burden, functioning as what one calls 'foot guns for our users.' The segment is a relatable, humorous reminder that physical hardware controls are often overlooked during software-focused troubleshooting, and that checking the obvious first can save significant time.

FAQ

What should I check first when a user reports their Wi-Fi has stopped working?

Before diving into software or network diagnostics, check for physical hardware controls — a toggle switch on the side of the laptop, or a dedicated Wi-Fi disable key near the function row on the keyboard. These are accidentally triggered far more often than most users realize.

Why do laptop manufacturers include Wi-Fi and trackpad disable buttons if they cause so many problems?

The speakers don't offer a manufacturer rationale, but express frustration that these buttons exist at all, describing them as 'foot guns' — features that end up harming the very users they're meant to serve by making accidental disabling too easy.
