the company was breaking apart pallets in the 100-degree California summer, which was, I gotta say, really exciting and what I actually thought I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. But it ended up that I was the only guy that was really quote-unquote good with computers as our single IT guy at the time, because we didn't really call them system administrators 15 to 20 years ago, as our single IT guy was not keeping up with the times. At the time we were on a Windows 2003 R2 terminal server that also functioned as our print server, that also functioned as our domain controller, that also had a local backup that went to tapes that went back to his house every night, and we were on DSL with a dial-up backup. There's a lot of writing on that machine. Man, there was a lot of hopes and prayers that kept that thing running over the years, with, by the way, a Netgear firewall at the edge that took about 15 minutes to reboot when it needed to be rebooted about twice a day because it would crash. Oh, man. It was an exciting time for a small steel company in Northern California.

TL;DR

  • A PDQ community member shares how he accidentally became the sole IT person at a small California steel company simply because he was the most computer-literate employee available.
  • The company's entire IT infrastructure ran on a single Windows Server 2003 R2 box acting as terminal server, print server, and domain controller simultaneously — a classic single point of failure.
  • Nightly tape backups went home with the IT guy, connectivity was DSL with dial-up backup, and a Netgear firewall crashed twice daily — capturing the precarious reality of early 2000s small-business IT.

Summary

In this short-form clip, a PDQ community member recounts the chaotic early days of being the de facto IT person at a small steel company in Northern California — before the role even had a proper title. Starting out breaking apart pallets in 100-degree summer heat, he stumbled into IT simply because he was the only person around who was reasonably comfortable with computers. The existing IT setup was a textbook example of legacy infrastructure held together by hope: a single Windows Server 2003 R2 machine simultaneously serving as terminal server, print server, and domain controller, with tape backups physically transported to the IT guy's house each night. Connectivity ran on DSL with a dial-up failover, and a Netgear firewall at the network edge crashed roughly twice a day — requiring a 15-minute reboot each time. The anecdote is delivered with humor and nostalgia, resonating strongly with sysadmins who remember the era of doing everything with nothing. It serves as relatable brand content for PDQ's audience of IT practitioners who have lived through similar under-resourced, high-stakes environments.
