Picture this, you have a giant change. So you can either drop one giant pull request that nobody wants to review, or you split it across branches that you have to rebase manually forever. With stacks, what you can do is break that change into an ordered series of small pull requests. And each one is a focused layer targeting the layer below it. Open anyone, and you only see the diff for that layer with a stack map showing how it fits in. So your team reviews layers in parallel without blocking each other. Then when you're ready, merge the latest ready pull request and it lands that one plus every unmerged layer below it, or land just part of the stack and the ones above stay open and automatically rebase your existing reviews, checks and branch protections all still apply. This works on github.com, the CLI, the mobile app, and you can also use a coding agent like GitHub Copilot using the GH stack skill. Rolling out to all repositories over the coming days, check out stack pull requests link in the description.

TL;DR

  • Stacked pull requests are now in public preview on GitHub, letting teams break large code changes into an ordered chain of small, focused PRs instead of one unwieldy monolith.
  • Each layer in a stack shows only its own diff plus a visual stack map, enabling parallel review without reviewers blocking one another.
  • Merging a ready layer automatically lands it along with all unmerged layers below it, and layers above auto-rebase while preserving existing reviews and branch protections.

Summary

GitHub has launched stacked pull requests into public preview, offering development teams a structured alternative to the two painful extremes of large code reviews: the monolithic PR that overwhelms reviewers, and the fragile multi-branch approach that demands constant manual rebasing. With stacked PRs, a large change is decomposed into an ordered chain of focused layers, where each pull request targets only the layer directly below it. Reviewers see only the diff relevant to that layer, accompanied by a visual stack map that shows where it sits in the overall change. Teams can review layers in parallel without blocking one another, accelerating throughput on complex features. When a layer is ready to ship, merging it automatically lands that layer plus all unmerged layers beneath it — or teams can choose to merge only part of the stack, with layers above automatically rebasing and preserving existing reviews, checks, and branch protections. The feature is available across github.com, the GitHub CLI, and the GitHub mobile app, and can also be driven by GitHub Copilot via the gh-stack skill. Rollout to all repositories is underway.

Key Quotes

0:06 "... you can either drop one giant pull request that nobody wants to review, or you split it across branches that you have to rebase manually forever."
0:25 "... each one is a focused layer targeting the layer below it."
0:38 "... your team reviews layers in parallel without blocking each other."

FAQ

Do existing branch protections and CI checks still apply when using stacked pull requests?

Yes. Existing reviews, checks, and branch protections all continue to apply across the stack. Merging part of the stack triggers automatic rebasing of layers above without bypassing any configured protections.

How can I start using stacked pull requests today?

Stacked PRs are available on github.com, the GitHub CLI, and the GitHub mobile app. You can also use GitHub Copilot with the gh-stack skill to create and manage stacks. The feature is rolling out to all repositories over the coming days.
