at Cohesity. In this video, we'll take a look at how you can quickly protect a VMware workload and demonstrate reliable recovery during a suspected ransomware event. Let's get started. For this demonstration, I'm stepping into the role of an IT Operations Lead responsible for VMware workloads that support a business-critical order processing application. The security team has flagged suspicious activity that could indicate the early stages of a ransomware attack. Before the situation spreads, we need to make sure the right VMs are protected and that we can quickly recover the application to a clean, reliable state if production is impacted. In this walkthrough, I'll show how Cohesity Cloud Services helps IT teams move from uncertainty to action by protecting the workload, validating recovery, and restoring confidence and business continuity. We've already registered VMware vCenter as a source so it's ready to use. IT Operations can pick VMs for protection and recovery. If you need to onboard another environment, just click Register Source on the Sources screen. Note that Cohesity Cloud Services also supports Azure, AWS, and other hypervisors. Since we know the risk, I'll protect the two VMs backing the order processing application so that we're not guessing during recovery. I'll select a protection policy, specifying the when, where, and how protection occurs. This shows how you can quickly and consistently bring new workloads under protection without a manual one-off configuration. If this is a mission-critical workload, I can choose specific wait times and set disk exclusions without changing the core flow. I'll open the activity log to verify the protection job started and is progressing, so we catch problems now, not while someone's waiting on recovery. While the protection jobs are running, we don't just wait. I'll take one of these VMs and do a test recovery to a new location with a clear prefix so we can verify the workflow works. Then we'll timeskip to completion to confirm that we can bring the service back online cleanly and predictably. Now we'll check the recovery in vSphere. I'll find the restored VM using the restore prefix or name, make sure that it's powered on, and look at recent activity to confirm the restore went smoothly. After that, I'll check the basics, the correct datastore, the expected network, and the right folder or resource placement. This way, we can be sure the restore actually works and that it's not just marked as finished. This completes the demonstration. We took a look at how you can use the Cohesity Cloud Service to protect and recover a VM or workload. Thanks for watching.

TL;DR

  • Cohesity Cloud Services is a fully managed BaaS platform that protects VMware workloads without requiring any on-premises infrastructure deployment or complex manual configuration.
  • The demo simulates a ransomware threat scenario, showing how IT teams can immediately protect critical VMs using policy-based automation rather than reactive, ad hoc processes.
  • Test recovery to an isolated location with a naming prefix allows teams to validate that restores actually work before a real incident occurs, not just confirm a job status.

Summary

This short product demonstration, led by Shelley Calhoun-Jones, Technical Marketing Director at Cohesity, walks through how IT operations teams can rapidly protect and recover VMware workloads using Cohesity Cloud Services — a fully managed Backup-as-a-Service offering that requires no on-premises infrastructure. The scenario is grounded in a realistic ransomware threat: a security team has flagged suspicious activity targeting a business-critical order processing application backed by two VMware VMs. Rather than waiting for confirmation of a full attack, the demo shows how an IT Operations Lead can immediately bring those VMs under protection using a predefined policy that specifies when, where, and how backups occur — eliminating manual, one-off configuration. The walkthrough covers source registration (with VMware vCenter already onboarded), policy-based protection, activity log monitoring, and a test recovery to a clean, isolated location using a naming prefix to distinguish restored instances. The final step validates the recovery in vSphere by confirming the VM is powered on, placed in the correct datastore and network, and fully operational — not just marked complete. The demo emphasizes that Cohesity Cloud Services also supports Azure, AWS, and other hypervisors, positioning it as a multi-cloud BaaS platform suitable for hybrid enterprise environments.
