Like there is, and not just robotics, but yes, also robotics, right? If we have something else doing all of the things and all we have left is just consuming social media and entertainment media and all of their, all of these things that are competing for our time. Like I don't ever feel better than whenever I'm taking a break from all online things. Never feel better. I go camping, I get out in nature. I don't have access to anything. No one has access to me. Best feeling in the world. Genuinely. It's like, I need those breaks at least like once or twice a year. I go somewhere where I literally, I don't have cell service. I don't want anybody to be able to talk to me other than whoever I'm there with, which is usually my son and maybe some other members of my family. But like, I don't, I never feel better than when I get back from that. And then I have to get back into the drudgery of being constantly and consistently online and consuming things.

TL;DR

  • Automation and constant connectivity may be contributing to unhappiness by reducing meaningful human activity to passive media consumption.
  • The speaker finds genuine mental relief only when fully disconnected from technology during camping trips with family.
  • The clip frames pervasive automation — including robotics and algorithmic media — as a potential threat to human wellbeing, not just a productivity tool.

Summary

In this short clip from the SolarWinds TechPod, a speaker reflects on the psychological and social costs of pervasive automation and constant digital connectivity. The central argument is that as automation — from robotics to algorithmic content feeds — takes over more of daily life, what remains for humans is largely passive consumption of social and entertainment media. Rather than feeling liberated by technology, the speaker describes feeling trapped in a cycle of compulsory online engagement. Drawing on personal experience, they contrast the mental relief of fully disconnecting during camping trips with no cell service against the 'drudgery' of returning to an always-on digital existence. The clip frames automation not as a purely positive force but as something that may be quietly eroding human wellbeing by crowding out meaningful, offline experience. It serves as a thought-provoking teaser for a longer TechPod episode exploring the unintended consequences of technological progress.

FAQ

What does the speaker mean by 'automating ourselves into unhappiness'?

The speaker suggests that as automation handles more tasks, humans are left primarily with passive activities like consuming social and entertainment media — a state they find unfulfilling compared to active, offline experiences like camping in nature.
