By leveraging our powerful data intelligence, we're making it accessible to our customers and their AI agents right within their existing workflows. This initial server focuses on our data catalog, serving as a bridge between BigID and AI tools. The BigID MCP server connection is secure. It supports token-based authentication, providing a secure way for AI agents to connect without using passwords. It also enforces RBAC authorization, ensuring that the agent's access to data is strictly limited by the granted permissions. Now let's take a look at it in action. As you can see, the BigID data catalog is now configured and available within the Cloud environment. Right here, you can see the primary actions the server exposes to Cloud, such as ListTools, which allows the agent to see all the available tools of the MCP, which are effectively all the APIs the server exposes, and CallTool, the core action that allows the agent to execute specific API calls on the BigID platform. Excellent. Let's move on to the first use case and ask the agent a simple question. Which BigID tools do you have? And here is the response. What you're seeing is the agent's representation of our APIs. The agent is now aware of all the available commands, along with a description of what each one does. This simple query has given the agent a complete picture of its capabilities, all from a single intuitive question. Now let's ask to perform a specific task that leverages BigID's data catalog capabilities. This time, I'll ask for something actionable. What are the top five files that contain PII data? And here is the result. We don't just get a list of files. We get rich contextual information for each one, including the file name and its exact path, the PII data types it contains, and the risk level. As you can see, it also provides us as insights summary and recommended remediation actions. But what about getting a high-level summary of our entire data landscape? For this, I'll ask a question that would normally require a data analyst and a BI tool, get me insights about my data catalog, and display it in a graphic way. Behind the scenes, the agent performs a series of actions. It calls relevant APIs to gather the necessary data, writes the HTML code, and instantly generates a customizable dashboard and visualizations that would typically take hours of manual work. And just like that, we have a dynamic dashboard. This isn't a static image. This is live, interactive data from the BIG-ID catalog. We can see visualizations summarizing our data sources, the top PII object types, and the distribution of our highest risk data, all in one place.

TL;DR

  • BigID's MCP server enables AI agents to securely query enterprise data catalogs using natural language, with token-based authentication and RBAC authorization ensuring governed access without password exposure.
  • The integration allows AI agents to perform complex data discovery tasks, such as identifying top PII-containing files with risk levels and recommended remediation actions, through simple conversational queries.
  • Users can generate dynamic, interactive dashboards and visualizations from catalog data instantly, automating analysis work that would typically require hours of manual effort from data analysts and BI tools.

Summary

This demonstration introduces BigID's first Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, which enables AI agents to securely access and query enterprise data catalogs through natural language. The MCP server acts as a secure bridge between BigID's data intelligence platform and AI tools, implementing token-based authentication and role-based access control (RBAC) to ensure governed data access. The demo showcases three practical use cases: discovering available API capabilities through conversational queries, identifying high-risk PII data with contextual insights and remediation recommendations, and generating dynamic dashboards with interactive visualizations from catalog data. This integration allows organizations to leverage AI agents for data discovery and analysis tasks that would traditionally require manual effort from data analysts, while maintaining enterprise-grade security controls and access governance throughout the interaction.

Key Quotes

0:00 "Today, I'm excited to introduce a landmark moment for BigID, our very first MCP server."
0:34 "It also enforces RBAC authorization, ensuring that the agent's access to data is strictly limited by the granted permissions."

FAQ

How does BigID's MCP server ensure secure access for AI agents?

The MCP server implements token-based authentication, eliminating the need for password-based access, and enforces role-based access control (RBAC) to strictly limit AI agent access based on granted permissions. This ensures that AI agents can only interact with data they're authorized to access, maintaining enterprise security standards.

What types of queries can AI agents perform through the BigID MCP server?

AI agents can discover available API capabilities, query for specific data assets like files containing PII, retrieve contextual information including risk levels and remediation recommendations, and generate interactive dashboards with visualizations summarizing data sources, PII types, and risk distributions across the data catalog.
