Super excited to announce this new partnership with Canonical. Could you tell us a little bit about who Canonical is and what you do? Thank you first of all for inviting us here. It's great to be at our first .NEXT and of course I'd love to talk about Canonical. Canonical's probably best known for the Ubuntu distribution, the Linux that everyone uses on their desktops. In reality, in recent years we've become well known in the enterprise side of the house for Ubuntu Pro, where we take that operating system and make it available with maintenance for 12 years and then we add to that an ecosystem of open source around it that we deliver that same maintenance and support offer to. Appreciate that. Tell me a little bit about what we're doing together, what's in our partnership, what does that entail? One of the key strengths around Ubuntu has been our success in the cloud native market. So the place that it made sense for us to bring that maintenance of open source to was the NKP product. The announcement that came out this week that we're so excited about is the fact that NKP will now be available to Nutanix customers with the Ubuntu distribution powering it from below. So bringing that security and maintenance consistency to NKP make it easier for everyone to do the right thing. That's outstanding. I think we're super excited to see that happen. Can you tell me a little bit about what you think the benefits are going to be, not only for Nutanix NKP customers, but also for Canonical's customers? Love to. I was speaking to a CISO here yesterday, I always start with the story. And we were talking about the challenge of how to help people on that cloud native journey. There are really two challenges that sort of go together. One is security, and the other is complexity. And so the thing that we're striving to do with your folks is really address those. And really the best way to address security is to make it the simplest path. And so by bundling these two things together and creating a new offer, we are creating the simplest path for people to adopt Kubernetes in a secure way that's enterprise grade. Along the way, we're addressing that simplicity challenge, which for cloud native has been an issue. Kubernetes adoption has undoubtedly been challenged by that sophistication of how that ecosystem works, really meaning that you need a certain degree of expertise to roll it out and then maintain it and operate it in a sensible way. We certainly love that story. Simplicity and simplifying the complex is a lot of what we're about here at Nutanix. And bringing Ubuntu into the fold with us and giving our customers that option when deploying it in KP is super exciting. What is it about Ubuntu that differentiates you from the other Linux OSs out there? I think it's our cloud native focus. In terms of what we've done in the Kubernetes and container space and the wider open source ecosystem naturally lends itself to cloud native. We've brought that maintenance consistency to a wide range of tools that people use when they're innovating at the speed of cloud native. We've made it a safe thing to do. That has been a real differentiator for us. It's a point of ease of consumption. We've made it easier for people to move at the speed of innovation, but at the same time deliver that enterprise IT operational expectation that people have. Is it ready for compliance? Is it actually fit for purpose? Can my operators be confident that they can call someone at 2 a.m. and know that they're going to get a sensible answer? Is it being maintained? All of that is in our DNA from what we did with Ubuntu, and we brought that to the cloud native space. That's outstanding, and I love to hear that. Again, driving that simplicity for all of our customers, giving them a full stack solution from the OS all the way up into the Kubernetes layer and beyond. It's an exciting part of what we're about, and we're looking forward to this relationship with Canonical and to Ubuntu everywhere with NKP. I appreciate your time, Mark. Thank you for stopping by. Thanks, Brad. Take care.

TL;DR

  • Nutanix partners with Canonical to bring Ubuntu operating system to Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), providing enterprise-grade foundation for cloud-native workloads
  • Ubuntu Pro delivers 12-year maintenance commitment and comprehensive support for the open-source ecosystem powering NKP deployments
  • Partnership addresses security and complexity challenges by making secure Kubernetes adoption the simplest path for enterprise customers

Summary

Nutanix and Canonical announce a strategic partnership to integrate Ubuntu as the operating system foundation for Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP). The collaboration brings Ubuntu Pro's 12-year maintenance commitment and enterprise-grade support to NKP, addressing two critical challenges in cloud-native adoption: security and complexity. By bundling Ubuntu's proven cloud-native capabilities with NKP, the partnership aims to create the simplest path for enterprises to deploy Kubernetes securely while maintaining operational consistency. The integration provides customers with a full-stack solution from the OS layer through Kubernetes orchestration, backed by Canonical's extensive open-source ecosystem maintenance and 24/7 enterprise support. This partnership positions both companies to serve organizations seeking to accelerate cloud-native and AI workload deployments without sacrificing security or operational stability.
