active and passive network scanning. We'll start with active scanning. This is great when you need a real-time snapshot of devices. Just head to the Admin menu, select Discovery, hit Add to start a new scan, then enter your IP range and adjust any options you'd like. When you're ready, click Save. You'll see your scan running right on the dashboard. Passive scanning, on the other hand, runs in the background and automatically discovers every device on your network. Head to Passive Discovery Settings in the Discovery menu, choose the subnet you'd like to monitor, then select a device to act as a representative agent for that subnet. This agent quietly listens for any device connecting and updates your inventory in real-time. You can even fine-tune settings with custom listening ports or exclude trusted devices to reduce unnecessary alerts. Once you've enabled passive scanning, Ivanti will automatically keep your asset inventory up-to-date, no manual scans required. But see for yourself, try active and passive scanning in Ivanti Neurons for complete, continuous visibility across your entire network.

TL;DR

  • Ivanti Neurons for Discovery offers both active scanning for real-time device snapshots via IP range configuration and passive scanning that runs continuously in the background.
  • Passive scanning uses designated agent devices on subnets to automatically detect and inventory any connecting devices without manual intervention.
  • The platform provides customization options including custom listening ports and device exclusions to reduce unnecessary alerts while maintaining complete network visibility.

Summary

This demonstration walks through Ivanti Neurons for Discovery's dual-mode asset discovery capabilities, showcasing both active and passive network scanning approaches. Active scanning provides on-demand, real-time snapshots of devices by configuring IP ranges through the Admin menu, while passive scanning operates continuously in the background using designated agent devices that monitor subnet traffic. The passive approach automatically updates asset inventory without manual intervention, offering configuration options for custom listening ports and device exclusions to minimize false alerts. Together, these complementary methods enable organizations to maintain comprehensive, up-to-date visibility across their entire network infrastructure without requiring constant manual scans or administrative overhead.

FAQ

What's the difference between active and passive scanning in Ivanti Neurons?

Active scanning provides on-demand, real-time snapshots of devices by scanning specified IP ranges, while passive scanning runs continuously in the background using agent devices that monitor network traffic and automatically update inventory without manual intervention.

How does passive scanning work without impacting network performance?

Passive scanning uses a designated representative agent device on each subnet that quietly listens for device connections. You can fine-tune settings with custom listening ports and exclude trusted devices to reduce unnecessary alerts and minimize overhead.
