The idea that we understand that there are vulnerabilities in all software products, in all hardware products. No one actually has discovered a way to write bug free software yet. Now, once they do, then great, maybe then we can have an argument about, you know, somebody actually marketing themselves as actually having, you know, completely secure software or hardware. But until we get to that world, everybody has that. And so I think having a little bit of humility about your products, about the outcomes, so that you can embrace the fact that everyone is in this together. And that also means embracing the fact that you actually work together as a community to eliminate and patch these vulnerabilities, not as trying to use it as some sort of competitive wedge. Because today may be your turn or today may be somebody else's turn. But next week is your turn. Right. And that we all want to be able to raise the level of cybersecurity across the entire ecosystem. And we want to be competing on other things.

TL;DR

  • No vendor has achieved bug-free software, making humility about product vulnerabilities essential for the entire cybersecurity industry.
  • Using competitors' vulnerabilities as competitive leverage is counterproductive since every vendor will eventually face their own security issues.
  • Industry-wide collaboration on vulnerability disclosure and patching raises security standards for the entire ecosystem more effectively than competitive isolation.

Summary

In this RSA Conference 2024 panel excerpt, Michael Daniel, President and CEO of the Cyber Threat Alliance, makes a compelling case for humility as a foundational principle in cybersecurity. Daniel argues that since no vendor has yet discovered how to write bug-free software, the entire industry shares a common vulnerability challenge. Rather than using competitors' security flaws as marketing ammunition, he advocates for a collaborative approach where vendors work together to identify and patch vulnerabilities across the ecosystem. This perspective challenges the traditional competitive dynamics of the security market, suggesting that true progress comes from acknowledging shared weaknesses and focusing competition on areas other than vulnerability counts. The message aligns with Fortinet's stated commitment to responsible, radical transparency in security practices.

Key Quotes

0:00 "I will actually use a word that doesn't come naturally to the cyber security industry, which is humility."
0:19 "No one actually has discovered a way to write bug free software yet."
0:48 "You actually work together as a community to eliminate and patch these vulnerabilities, not as trying to use it as some sort of competitive wedge."

FAQ

Why does Michael Daniel emphasize humility in cybersecurity?

Daniel argues that since no one has discovered how to write bug-free software or hardware, every vendor shares the same fundamental vulnerability challenge. Acknowledging this reality allows the industry to collaborate on patching and improving security rather than using competitors' flaws as marketing weapons.
