All right, let's start at the beginning. What's an MCP? Sounds good. So MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. A little over a year ago, Anthropic open-sourced this protocol that they were starting to use internally. So it was a way for them to kind of standardize the way your models and your data integrated to make AI agent building more seamless, make it easy to discover what tools are available. Now there's a standard integration, which did nothing other than accelerate the pace at which AI is happening. Now all of a sudden, there's a standard way to connect. You make it easier to build these agents and connect. Yeah, it'll really accelerate it. Please do like and subscribe and we will see you here next time that you need an explanation.

TL;DR

  • MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard originally developed internally by Anthropic to standardize how AI models connect with data and tools.
  • By creating a universal integration layer, MCP removes the complexity of building custom connectors for every AI agent use case, lowering the barrier to development.
  • Standardization is the key accelerant — once a common connection method exists, the speed at which AI agents can be built and deployed increases dramatically.

Summary

This short explainer from Nutanix's 'I/O You an Explanation' series breaks down Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open-source standard originally developed and used internally by Anthropic before being released to the broader developer community roughly a year ago. MCP defines a standardized way for AI models to connect with data sources and external tools, removing the friction that previously made building AI agents complex and inconsistent. By establishing a common integration layer, MCP makes it significantly easier for developers to discover available tools and wire them into AI workflows without custom, one-off connectors. The core argument presented is that standardization is the primary accelerant for AI agent development — once there is a universal way to connect models to data, the pace of innovation compounds rapidly. The video positions MCP not as a niche technical specification but as a foundational shift in how AI systems are built and extended, framing it as a key enabler for the next wave of enterprise AI adoption.

FAQ

What problem does MCP solve for AI developers?

Before MCP, connecting AI models to different data sources and tools required custom, non-standardized integrations for each use case. MCP provides a single, universal protocol so developers can discover available tools and connect models to data in a consistent way, making AI agent development faster and more scalable.

Who created MCP and is it open source?

MCP was created by Anthropic, who initially used it as an internal standard. Approximately a year ago, Anthropic open-sourced the protocol, making it available for the broader AI development community to adopt and build upon.
