I talk with organizations a lot about why cybersecurity matters at the office, but it matters just as much at home. Today, I want to share my cyber scare story with you. Recently, I was at my parents' house, and my dad casually said, hey, Aceta, you have a delivery coming. And I was like, wait, what do you mean? I don't understand, Dad. What do you mean I have a delivery coming? He said, well, I got a text message about it. Hold up. KnowBe4 has taught me that an unexpected message with a link is likely a scam. I said, Dad, what do you mean you got a text message about my delivery? He said, well, I didn't order anything, so I figured you did. My dad has been schooling me for my entire life, so you bet. I jumped at the opportunity to teach him something for once. Here's my golden rule. Never click the link in an unexpected text message or email. If you don't know what it is, report it and delete it immediately. If you think it might be real, go directly to the shipping carrier's official website to track it. Share your cyber scare in the comments below.

TL;DR

  • Fake delivery text messages — known as smishing — are among the most common scams targeting everyday consumers, often arriving without any prior order or context.
  • Never click links in unexpected text messages or emails; if you're unsure, report the message and delete it immediately without engaging.
  • If you believe a delivery notification might be legitimate, go directly to the shipping carrier's official website rather than following any link in the message.

Summary

In this short awareness clip, KnowBe4 security advocate Aceta Drake shares a real-life smishing encounter involving her father, who received an unexpected text message claiming a delivery was on its way. Because he hadn't ordered anything, he assumed it was for his daughter — nearly clicking the link without a second thought. Aceta uses the moment to illustrate one of the most common social engineering tactics targeting everyday consumers: fake delivery notifications designed to trick recipients into clicking malicious links. Her core advice is straightforward and memorable — never click a link in an unexpected text or email. If the message seems suspicious, report it and delete it immediately. If you genuinely think a delivery might be real, bypass the link entirely and go directly to the shipping carrier's official website to track your package. The video is a relatable, accessible reminder that cybersecurity awareness isn't just a workplace concern — it applies equally at home, and family members who haven't received formal security training are often the most vulnerable targets.

FAQ

What should I do if I receive an unexpected text about a package delivery?

Do not click any link in the message. If you think it might be legitimate, go directly to the official website of the shipping carrier and use their tracking tool to verify. If you don't recognize the message at all, report it and delete it immediately.

Why are fake delivery texts so effective as scams?

They exploit the expectation that packages are frequently in transit, making recipients less likely to question the message. Even people who didn't order anything may assume the text is meant for someone else in their household, lowering their guard.
