For thirty years, every storage refresh priced lower than the one before it. You bought again in three to five years, you got more capacity, and you paid less. Density improved faster than demand, and the buyer collected the difference. Finance teams built the refresh line around that rule without ever writing it down, since a pattern that has never failed does not invite questions.
This refresh breaks the rule. DRAM contract prices rose 90 to 95 percent quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026, and NAND flash climbed 70 to 75 percent in the same window. TrendForce projects conventional DRAM up another 13 to 18 percent and NAND up 10 to 15 percent in the third quarter, with server demand holding supply tight into 2027.
The shortage does not correct on its own. Wafer capacity has moved to High Bandwidth Memory for the cloud AI build-out, and each HBM wafer displaces roughly three conventional DRAM wafers. New fab capacity does not arrive in volume before late 2027, which puts meaningful price relief in 2028 or later.
The consequence lands on the refresh you already have planned. The array you bought at the last cycle costs more to replace than it cost to buy, and it holds no more data. Nothing in the purchase history of storage looks like that. The refresh line in your plan is the one number nobody stress-tested, and the people who built it have never worked a market that moves this direction.
Waiting solves nothing, since the relief arrives after your hardware support expires. Buying the same architecture at a worse price is a decision, and it deserves to be named as one before you sign. The way out is not a cheaper array. It is not buying the array.
