and verify that it's been set up properly. So one gotcha or caveat to call out here when you're trying to leverage MCP servers via the Cloud Code extension inside of Visual Studio Code, it's not as accessible to all those resources like you would from the CLI or Cloud's desktop application. And when you look at the documentation on Anthropx website, VS Code extension versus Cloud Code CLI, you can see the features differ of what's available in the VS Code extension version and the CLI version. So for commands and skills, you can access all of them from the CLI, but only a subset of them from the VS Code extension for some reason. And then MCP server configurations, you can get them all from the CLI, but only partially from the VS Code extension. For some reason, you have to add servers via the CLI and manage existing servers with MCP in the chat panel. So keep that in mind. If you prefer going through Visual Studio Code to access Cloud Code that way, you're going to run into some gotchas or hiccups like this.

TL;DR

  • The Claude Code VS Code extension does not expose the full feature set available in the CLI, including commands, skills, and MCP server configurations.
  • MCP server configurations are only partially accessible in VS Code — new servers must be added via the CLI rather than through the extension UI.
  • Developers who prefer a VS Code-only workflow should expect gotchas when working with Claude Code's MCP integration and plan accordingly.

Summary

This short clip, extracted from a longer tutorial, highlights a practical limitation developers encounter when using the Claude Code extension inside Visual Studio Code compared to the Claude Code CLI or desktop application. The presenter explains that after configuring an MCP server, the VS Code extension does not provide full access to all available resources. Specifically, commands and skills are only partially accessible through the extension, whereas the CLI exposes the complete set. Similarly, MCP server configurations are only partially surfaced in the VS Code extension — new servers must be added via the CLI, with existing servers managed through the MCP chat panel. Developers who prefer working entirely within VS Code should be aware of these gaps before committing to that workflow, as they may encounter unexpected friction when attempting to leverage the full feature set of Claude Code's MCP integration.

FAQ

Can I use Claude Code's MCP servers entirely within VS Code without touching the CLI?

Not fully. While existing MCP servers can be managed through the VS Code chat panel, new servers must be added via the CLI. The extension also only exposes a subset of commands, skills, and MCP configurations available in the full CLI.
