where I oversee the entire IT division from daily operation and infrastructure management to strategy planning and digital transformation initiative. The Malaysian Rubber Council or MRC operate under the Ministry of Plantation and Commodity and our organisation is governed by Board of Trustees appointed by the Ministry. MRC's core mandate is to promote high-quality Malaysian rubber and rubber products in global market, strengthening our industry competitiveness and ensuring Malaysia remain as a trusted leader in the international rubber sector. In my role, I work closely with leadership and business unit to ensure technology is aligned with our mission, supporting market promotion, enhancing operational efficiency and enabling innovation across the organisation. I look forward to sharing more about our digital initiative and exploring how Sengpor Technology can support our ongoing transformation. Before partnering with Sengpor, we were relying on a managed SOC service from another vendor. While they did provide some level of monitoring, it was mostly focused on our cloud environment. Unfortunately, this meant on our premises server and even our staff workstation had very limited visibility, leaving significant gaps in our overall security posture. Another challenge was the quality of the report we received. The previous SOC mainly shared network utilisation updates, but rarely any meaningful cybersecurity finding. Most of the reports were full of raw data and graphs without clear explanation of what the threats were, how critical they might be or what action we should take. It often felt like we were getting information, but not insight. Communication was also a major pain point. We didn't have a dedicated contact person, so every time an incident occurred, we had to repeat the same background to a different analysis. Since all communications was handed through email, even urgent issues could take an extra 10 to 15 minutes just to get a response, which is far from ideal when you are dealing with potential security incidents. When we started exploring SANG for Athena MDR, what immediately stood out to us was how complete the service was. Not just the technology, but the dedicated team supporting it, it genuinely felt like true extension of our own IT team. With our lean IT setup, we needed a solution that could take on the heavy lifting of monitoring analysis and incident response, allowing us to stay focused on our daily operation without worrying that something might slip through the cracks. Athena MDR gave us exactly that peace of mind. It provided comprehensive coverage across our environment, our cloud system, on-premises servers and even staff endpoints, all supported by 24x7 monitoring and real-time threat response. They gave us visibility and confidence at a level we simply didn't have before. This was another major consideration. Building our own in-house SoC would have required multiple new hires, significant investment and a long timeline to achieve full maturity. With SANG for MDR, everything comes as a complete package. The tools, the technology and the experience, all in one cost-effective service. And to be honest, with the level of support responsiveness and expertise we have experienced so far, we can say it has been as close to a perfect service as we could ask for. Since adopting SANG for MDR, we've seen significant improvement across our entire environment. First, we now have complete visibility into what's happening, not just a list of alerts but verified incidents and clear explanations of their actions. The Athena MDR team even shared details and samples of what they investigate, which really boosts our confidence that every alert is properly examined and nothing is overlooked. Respond time has also improved tremendously. Previously, we had to wait nearly an hour before getting support on the ground. But now, our dedicated CSM acknowledge and respond within minutes. And with direct communications to WhatsApp, everything moves much faster and feels far more convenient than relying on email or ticketing systems, which can slow things down during urgent situations. We've also seen proactive improvement from the MDR team. They regularly review the configurations on our systems and fine-tune them where needed. For example, we used to receive recurring alerts caused by overly sensitive settings. After MDR stepped in to adjust those configurations, those unnecessary distractions disappeared, giving us stronger protections without affecting our daily operations. Having SANG for MDR on board has really lightened the load of our IT team. We can focus on our main responsibility while knowing there's a team of experts watching our environment, 24 by 7. We know that every alert is inspected, every tweet is contained quickly, with continuous optimisations every month. For us, SANG for MDR isn't just a service. It's like having an extended team who knows our environment and keeps us protected without slowing us down. At SANG for MDR, we have gained real peace of mind knowing that our organisation is protected every day, every hour, and every minute. The consistency, the responsiveness, and the dedication truly make a difference. Big thank you and a great job to the SANG for Athena MDR team.

TL;DR

  • Malaysian Rubber Council replaced an ineffective managed SOC that only monitored cloud environments, leaving on-premises infrastructure and endpoints with critical visibility gaps and providing unclear reports without actionable security insights.
  • Sangfor Athena MDR delivered comprehensive 24x7 coverage across cloud, on-premises servers, and workstations with verified incident analysis, clear explanations, and proactive configuration tuning that eliminated recurring false positives.
  • Response times improved dramatically from nearly one hour to just minutes through direct WhatsApp communication with a dedicated Customer Success Manager, providing the equivalent of an in-house SOC without the hiring and infrastructure investment.

Summary

Kevin Cheah, IT Director at the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC), shares how his government-linked organization transformed its cybersecurity posture by adopting Sangfor Athena MDR. Operating under Malaysia's Ministry of Plantation and Commodities with a lean IT team, MRC faced critical visibility gaps with their previous managed SOC provider, which only monitored cloud environments while leaving on-premises servers and workstations exposed. The organization struggled with unclear reporting that provided raw data without actionable insights, and communication delays that could take 10-15 minutes during urgent incidents. After implementing Sangfor Athena MDR, MRC gained comprehensive 24x7 coverage across their entire environment, dramatically improved response times from nearly an hour to just minutes via direct WhatsApp communication with a dedicated Customer Success Manager, and received proactive configuration optimization that eliminated false positives. The service provided the equivalent of an in-house SOC without the significant investment in hiring, training, and infrastructure, allowing MRC's IT team to focus on core responsibilities while maintaining confidence in their security posture.
