Cloud based backups or backup as a service are really not as secure and reliable as what I can build myself. Let's start with you, Chris. What you've seen, and then we'll turn it over to Matt. Yeah, it's a great question. I think at the end of the day, you know, you have to look at it and think, if you're a vendor that builds these sort of solutions in the cloud, you know, you're not going to build something that isn't going to be secure. You're not going to build something that isn't going to deliver what the client wants, because it's your bread and butter. So, you know, you're going to you're going to know how to build this sort of solution. You're going to make it work. Um, the cloud providers who who build these sort of backup services, people like Druva and other, um, similar companies. Security is going to be one of their main focuses, because clearly they're dealing with many customers. They have to handle things like multi-tenancy, and they have to have that ability to make sure all of that data is securely separated from any other client that they're dealing with. So, you know, there's just no way they're not going to be good at doing this. I agree. I think that the key point that, uh, that Chris is making here is kind of where the lines of responsibility are, is, you know, if you're building it yourself and then you're responsible for securing it, you need to keep it up to date, you need to maintain it. And ultimately, it's your level of risk that you're kind of putting out there in terms of how well you do that. Um, when it's turned around, where it's the vendor providing this, you know, uh, there's a lot more, uh, guarantee behind it in terms of, you know, as a business, as the provider. You know, there are SLAs there, uh, you know, um. Certain guarantees and warranties that need to be provided for that service that that they are providing out to everybody else. And so as such, kind of the bar is set a little bit higher because, you know, as if you're consuming it from another vendor, you know, now they're responsible for all of this. And so if there's a problem, you know, you could seek some sort of compensation there. Whereas if you're doing it yourself, uh, you know, there's nobody to blame but yourself. Uh, and, uh, the consequences are different. So I think, you know, because of where the responsibility falls and the fact that there are various consequences that can stem from not achieving and delivering a proper and secure environment. Uh, you know, to to that point, I'd say that the cloud based vendor solutions are much more secure because they have to be.
The discussion centers on the security and reliability of cloud-based backup solutions or Backup as a Service (BaaS) as opposed to self-built systems. Both speakers, Chris and Matt, emphasize that cloud providers, like Druva and similar companies, prioritize security due to their business model which involves managing data for multiple clients (multi-tenancy) and maintaining a clear separation of data across their customer base.

Chris points out that vendors specializing in cloud solutions, such as Druva, are intrinsically motivated to create secure and effective backup systems since their reputation and business depend on it. Matt agrees and elaborates that the responsibility and risk factors differ when using a vendor's service versus a self-managed solution; with a provider, there's an expected level of service quality backed by Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and potential compensation for failures, placing a higher standard on the vendor.

Overall, the consensus is that using cloud-based backups or BaaS providers like Druva is likely more secure due to their commitment to security, the need to meet customer expectations, and the accountability measures inherent in their service offerings. This conversation underscores the competitive advantage and trustworthiness of professional BaaS solutions provided by dedicated cloud vendors, highlighting their focus on security and reliability for safeguarding customer data.
