What does object storage mean for real world use cases? In this short video, Jon Toor, CMO of Cloudian walks us through a few real world use cases that IT struggles with daily in terms of managing growth of unstructured data including backup/recovery, archival and managing media/video.

hi Dave Littman, Truth in IT joined

00:12

today by John Toor. John is CMO with

00:14

Cloudian and John welcome. Dave good

00:17

morning good morning so hey you're going

00:19

to take us through some of the

00:20

applications of enterprise object

00:23

storage so why don't you walk us through

00:25

that yeah thanks a lot Dave so what

00:29

we're going to talk about today is how

00:30

object storage gets deployed in the data

00:32

center a lot of people are heard about

00:35

object storage and are familiar with the

00:37

basic idea

00:38

you know it's limitlessly scalable it's

00:39

very cost effective but exactly how do I

00:42

put this solution to use I mean how do i

00:44

how do I actually you know deploy it so

00:47

the thing about object storage is really

00:49

interesting is essentially it can be

00:51

deployed for anything that involves

00:52

unstructured data so we'll talk in its

00:55

first video about backup and archive and

00:57

how it gets used there but really

01:00

anything that is unstructured data is a

01:02

great fit for object storage and that's

01:05

what makes us so appealing is we all

01:07

know about the data tsunami I mean the

01:10

50% increase in unstructured data

01:12

annually

01:13

well that increase is coming from all

01:16

these different sources as backup and

01:18

archive it's from media entertainment

01:19

it's from you know security videos bio

01:23

data I mean it's coming from all these

01:25

different sources and you know IT

01:27

managers are having to deal with us and

01:29

manage it object storage is the perfect

01:32

solution so let's talk first about

01:34

backup and archiving backup and recovery

01:36

and how we solve problems there so let's

01:40

scoot up to slide number four there

01:42

scalable data protection the challenges

01:45

of data protection have been known for

01:48

years and they're only getting bigger

01:51

and you really got two choices for how

01:54

to deal with a backup target so where do

01:57

you put that backup data well you can

01:58

put it on site on a disk based appliance

02:02

this is really you know the domain the

02:05

data domain made they're made they're

02:06

named in the challenge is they're just

02:10

it's cost you know it's great for speed

02:12

it's is

02:13

but it tends to be cost that tend to be

02:15

rather costly the other alternative

02:18

which is still very popular is state and

02:20

although this is a cost-effective medium

02:24

it tends to be of a pretty price a

02:26

pricey medium in terms of the handling

02:30

target handling costs the reliability

02:32

challenges just the long-term issues of

02:35

how you deal with archiving when formats

02:38

keep changing so it's got it's got

02:41

multiple issues that you really have to

02:43

contend with object storage addresses

02:47

both of those challenges because we're

02:49

object storage let you do is backup to

02:52

disk at a cost which is pretty close to

02:55

tape it's not quite at tape level but it

02:58

certainly is close enough where when you

02:59

factor in the soft costs associated with

03:02

tape and the cost of rewriting the media

03:04

the cost of all the handling it actually

03:06

comes out about the same but you get the

03:10

benefit of substantially better

03:12

performance so 70% less cost and in the

03:15

traditional typical disk base appliances

03:18

and very fast backup and restore because

03:20

you're dealing with a disk based medium

03:22

and the other thing that's really

03:23

critical here is that works with the

03:25

backup software that you already know

03:27

and love so rubric Veritas CommVault

03:30

beam the solution is interoperable with

03:33

all of those if you look at slide number

03:36

five you can see some of these cost

03:38

comparisons I'm talking about here and

03:40

what this environment is looking at is a

03:42

hundred terabytes of storage that are

03:44

growing year after year and you can see

03:47

as the time goes on in the data domain

03:50

case you're continually having to

03:51

upgrade your environment to add add new

03:53

gear which of course you're doing and in

03:55

the cloudian case as well but because

03:57

you're dealing with an inherently much

03:59

lower cost infrastructure the cost

04:02

remain much lower and this this cost is

04:05

lower for a couple of key point a couple

04:07

of key reasons one is that object

04:09

storage is fundamentally different than

04:11

other enterprise storage in in one

04:13

really important way and that is object

04:16

storage is built on industry standard

04:18

hardware so we sell both software you

04:21

can run on servers you already own or

04:23

you can buy an appliance from us either

04:25

way it's running on

04:27

industry standard hardware which is you

04:29

know the lowest cost storage type in the

04:32

industry you're not paying for anything

04:33

proprietary second thing is a cost of

04:37

management because the environments

04:39

scales limitlessly and I'll move on to

04:42

slide number six here because this

04:45

environment scales limitlessly it can

04:47

grow with your needs so you don't have

04:50

to buy a lot of stuff upfront you can

04:52

buy only three nodes three 1u high nodes

04:55

to begin with and then simply add into

04:58

that cluster as time goes by so you can

05:00

scale from terabytes up to many

05:04

petabytes with zero disruption and

05:07

that's something else is pretty

05:08

difficult to do with traditional

05:09

enterprise storage and as you're growing

05:12

the performance scales as well because

05:15

everything is operating in parallel so

05:18

that's that's the cost aspect of it the

05:21

other thing that's really interesting

05:22

about object storage as a backup target

05:25

is the uncompromising data durability

05:28

and slide number seven because object

05:31

storage was designed essentially to be a

05:34

single pool of storage for everything a

05:38

single consolidation point it was

05:40

designed to be highly durable from the

05:42

beginning and as such it includes

05:45

multiple technologies for data

05:47

durability including obviously

05:49

replication but also a racer coding and

05:52

you can think of a racer coding as sort

05:55

of like radon steroids it's or it's it's

05:58

performing raid across multiple nodes in

06:01

the environment even across multiple

06:03

data centers so as a result you can

06:06

essentially dial in whatever level of

06:08

data durability you need up to 14 nines

06:10

and this of course makes it a great

06:12

backup target because you know your data

06:14

is protectiveness environment this is

06:17

something this is well proven so slide

06:19

number eight we've got numerous

06:23

deployments with all the vendors I

06:25

mentioned already a combat Veritas VM

06:27

rubric and matter-of-fact CommVault gave

06:30

one of our customers shoe burg Phyllis

06:32

in Netherlands a Award for innovation in

06:36

their use of convolved

06:40

Cloudian as data protection as a service

06:43

and they thought they're really

06:44

impressed with you know that's scale and

06:47

the smoothness of the service that

06:50

Schubert Phillips was able to offer

06:51

using this device so slide number nine

06:57

yeah this is a robust proven solution

07:00

with all these you know different backup

07:02

environments we've talked about and it

07:04

includes a variety of features that make

07:06

it a great backup target you know

07:08

compression is built-in encryption is

07:10

built-in tearing to the cloud if you

07:13
