because it's actually the fundamental feature in allowing us to address misinformation. How can we identify data and its validity if we don't understand how it's being used? So I really like that. Oh boy. Yeah. I think of data as, and by the way, I also hate the phrase data is the new oil, but I think of data as like the reason we have to care about security, right? Like data is the thing that they're after. And by they, it could be, you know, your bank just needed to know your information for reasonable purposes, or it could be criminals or nation state actors, or your ex boyfriend who is trying to humiliate you. Right. And that's what makes it dangerous is that it, and I think Chris's point is like, even correct data can be dangerous. I see posture management is just really hard to do over time. It's like that old thing where people are always saying, just have good hygiene. And it's like, well, if it was that easy, everyone would just do it. But you really have to orchestrate and kind of manage and understand everything you have as resources in your environment. I often end up starting a conversation with a CISO by saying like, tell me about your last bad day.

TL;DR

  • Data security posture management is positioned as the foundational capability for addressing data misinformation and validity challenges in enterprise environments.
  • Panelists emphasize that data is the ultimate target for all threat actors, from legitimate institutions to nation-states to personal adversaries.
  • Maintaining security posture over time is acknowledged as genuinely difficult, requiring ongoing orchestration rather than simple hygiene practices.

Summary

This brief highlight reel from BigID's CISO Summit captures a candid panel discussion on why data security posture management has become foundational to modern security strategy. The panelists explore how DSPM enables organizations to address misinformation and data validity challenges by providing visibility into how data is actually being used across the enterprise. The conversation takes a practical turn as speakers acknowledge that while security hygiene sounds simple in theory, maintaining consistent posture management over time requires deliberate orchestration and comprehensive understanding of all resources in an environment. One panelist offers a memorable framing: data is ultimately what attackers are after, whether they're legitimate institutions, criminals, nation-state actors, or even personal adversaries seeking to cause harm. The clip concludes with a CISO engagement approach that cuts through vendor pitches by asking security leaders to describe their last bad day, grounding conversations in real operational challenges rather than theoretical capabilities.

FAQ

Why is data security posture management considered foundational?

According to the panelists, DSPM provides the visibility needed to understand how data is being used across an organization, which is essential for addressing data validity and misinformation challenges.
