is being able to use the computers and a wide variety of software on there, whether that's Adobe Illustrator to make designs, whether that's going to the laser cutter or somewhere else, or more traditional CAD software or any of the 3D printer slicing programs. So we ended up having these general use computers that had to have everything from Chrome to a slicer to SolidWorks and Adobe. And there was just a huge variety of software there. We had a Mac OS server with like two or three Mac computers and the rest were Windows. So it was all kind of LDAP and a little bit messy in terms of making those systems work together.

TL;DR

  • A makerspace membership environment required managing a wide variety of software including Adobe Illustrator, SolidWorks, CAD tools, and 3D printer slicers across shared computers.
  • The facility ran a mixed Mac and Windows fleet, with a Mac OS server and a few Mac clients alongside predominantly Windows machines.
  • LDAP-based identity management made cross-platform coordination messy, highlighting the need for a unified software management solution like PDQ.

Summary

This short clip features a customer describing the software management challenges faced at a makerspace or shared-access facility where membership includes access to a broad range of design and fabrication tools. The environment required supporting everything from Adobe Illustrator and SolidWorks to 3D printer slicing programs across a mixed fleet of Mac and Windows machines. Managing this heterogeneous setup — with a Mac OS server, a handful of Mac clients, and a majority of Windows endpoints — meant relying on LDAP and dealing with the complexity of making disparate systems work together. The clip positions PDQ as a solution to this kind of sprawling, multi-platform software management problem, implying that PDQ helped simplify or resolve the messy integration challenges inherent in running general-use computers with a wide and varied software stack.

FAQ

What types of software needed to be managed in this environment?

The environment required managing a wide range of software including Adobe Illustrator, SolidWorks, CAD applications, 3D printer slicing programs, and general-use tools like Chrome — all on shared computers accessible to members.

Why was managing this environment challenging?

The facility ran a mixed Mac and Windows fleet connected via LDAP, which made it difficult to ensure consistent software availability and system integration across different operating systems.
