or business continuity plan, and I need to understand meantime to recovery, I'm just generalizing. Well, every system isn't as important. And it really wasn't until I started doing the MSP thing that I kind of got like, oh yeah, we can't respond to every system. So some of the questions as an example will be, how long can email be down in an emergency? What's your window? The 24 hours, the 12 hours? Can we be down two days? The reason that this is important is because when you're doing your budget, redundancy is not cheap. So I can't have all of my systems redundant. And I promise you, the redundancy that you don't have, the person's gonna complain about when something happens. But I didn't really get them to tell me what was important, right? So part of everything we do is just having these conversations, whether it's about metrics, whether it's about security, whether it's about business continuity, business resilience, it doesn't matter. I have to understand what this business cares about. And the better questions I ask, the better decisions you're gonna make, and they're going to be defensible decisions.

TL;DR

  • Not all systems require the same level of redundancy — business stakeholders must define which systems are truly critical before a disaster recovery plan is finalized.
  • Redundancy is costly, and IT teams cannot protect everything equally, making prioritization conversations with the business essential.
  • Asking structured questions about acceptable downtime windows — such as how long email can be offline — leads to defensible, business-aligned recovery decisions.

Summary

This short-form clip addresses one of the most overlooked steps in disaster recovery and business continuity planning: asking the right questions before building the plan. The speaker draws on experience working with managed service providers to illustrate why not every system can — or should — receive the same level of redundancy. Using email downtime as a concrete example, the clip walks through how IT professionals must engage business stakeholders to define acceptable recovery windows, such as whether email can be offline for 12 hours, 24 hours, or two days. The core argument is that redundancy is expensive, and without explicit business input on what matters most, IT teams are left making assumptions that become indefensible when something fails. The speaker emphasizes that structured conversations — whether about metrics, security, or business resilience — are the foundation of sound IT decision-making. When the right questions are asked upfront, the resulting decisions are not only better aligned with business priorities but are also easier to justify to stakeholders after the fact.

Key Quotes

0:39 "Redundancy is not cheap. So I can't have all of my systems redundant."
0:45 "The redundancy that you don't have, the person's gonna complain about when something happens."
1:09 "I have to understand what this business cares about."

FAQ

Why does the speaker say you can't make every system redundant?

Redundancy is expensive, and budget constraints mean IT teams must prioritize. Without business input on which systems are most critical, IT professionals are left guessing — and those guesses often become points of conflict when something goes wrong.

What kinds of questions should IT teams ask when building a disaster recovery plan?

The speaker recommends asking stakeholders about acceptable downtime windows for specific systems — for example, how long email can be down in an emergency. These conversations help define recovery time objectives and ensure the plan reflects actual business priorities.
