Why are leaders still mistaking for progress? I think leaders are still tempted to treat visibility as a finish line, and it's not the finish line. Visibility tells us what exists on the network, what's connected, sometimes what's exposed, but security improves only when that insight changes the behavior. And if an unmanaged device, a clinical system, third-party connection, or a vulnerable asset is discovered and can't be restricted, access to it can't be restricted, then really, what have we accomplished? So this control gap paper that we put out there, it argues the next question, which is, after can we see it, what do we do about it?

TL;DR

  • Visibility is not security — knowing what exists on your network only matters if that insight drives a change in behavior or access control.
  • The 'control gap' describes the dangerous space between discovering a vulnerable or unmanaged asset and being able to restrict access to it.
  • Forescout positions automated enforcement as the critical capability that transforms passive visibility into genuine network defense.

Summary

In this short-form clip, a former CISO challenges a pervasive misconception in enterprise security: that achieving network visibility is equivalent to achieving security. The speaker argues that visibility — knowing what devices are connected, what is exposed, and what is vulnerable — is only the starting point, not the finish line. Security leaders who treat asset discovery as a completed objective are leaving a critical gap unaddressed. The real measure of security posture is whether insight translates into action: specifically, whether access to unmanaged devices, clinical systems, third-party connections, or vulnerable assets can actually be restricted once discovered. If an organization can see a risk but cannot act on it, the discovery itself provides little meaningful protection. This framing introduces Forescout's 'control gap' concept — the distance between what organizations can observe on their networks and what they can actually enforce — positioning automated control and policy enforcement as the essential next step beyond passive visibility tools.

FAQ

What is the 'control gap' that Forescout refers to?

The control gap is the space between an organization's ability to see assets on its network — including unmanaged devices, third-party connections, and vulnerable systems — and its ability to actually restrict or control access to those assets. Forescout argues that closing this gap is the true measure of network security.

Why do security leaders still treat visibility as a security goal?

According to the former CISO featured in this clip, leaders are tempted to treat visibility as a finish line because it is measurable and achievable. However, visibility alone does not improve security unless it changes behavior — specifically, unless it enables enforcement actions against discovered risks.
