I really wish that every team had an accurate map of their network, including every asset out there, but most importantly, the critical assets, who are the owners of those assets, what are their allowed communication paths, what protocols can they talk to, what other devices can they reach, who can reach those assets through which protocols and so on. In a zero day, that maps is what becomes the difference between a targeted action and just broad disruption. Without having that map, teams will probably either overreact or move too slowly to contain the actual threat.

TL;DR

  • An accurate network map — covering every asset, owner, and communication path — is the single most critical tool for zero-day preparedness.
  • Critical assets must be identified in advance, including who owns them and what protocols and devices they can communicate with.
  • Without this map, security teams risk overreacting with broad disruption or responding too slowly to contain an active threat.

Summary

In this short clip from Forescout Research Labs, a security expert answers a pointed question: what is the single most important thing every security team should have in place before the next major zero-day vulnerability strikes? The answer is an accurate, comprehensive map of the network. This means knowing every asset on the network — not just what exists, but who owns each asset, what communication protocols they use, which devices they can reach, and which external systems can reach them. In a zero-day scenario, that level of visibility is what separates a precise, targeted containment response from broad, disruptive overreaction. Teams without this foundational asset inventory risk either moving too slowly to contain the threat or triggering unnecessary disruption by acting without sufficient context. The core message is clear: network visibility and asset mapping are not optional hygiene tasks — they are the operational foundation that determines whether a team can respond effectively when a critical vulnerability is actively exploited.

FAQ

What should a network map include to be useful during a zero-day event?

According to the expert, an effective network map should include every asset on the network, the owners of those assets, their allowed communication paths, the protocols they use, the devices they can reach, and which external systems can reach them.
