Oh, my gosh. Vividly. Oh, do you remember free credit card pre-Rideshare? I do remember, yeah. That was great. Do I have enough cash for this? Is there a credit card machine in the cab? Does it work? It was terrible. And then you would get to... I remember my first Uber ride, and the thing that I remember was getting out because when you arrived in a cab, then you had to have a financial transaction. Is there... Does the cabbie have change? Do you have enough cash? If not, is there a credit card machine? Isn't going to work? Maybe one of those credit card machines. One of those? And I remember my first Uber ride, I just arrived, and I got out and walked away. And I was like, I am never getting in a cab again. Even though we were trained, don't talk to strangers on the internet and give them your financial information, and don't get in cars with strangers. It ended up working great.

TL;DR

  • Traditional cab rides were plagued by payment friction — cash shortages, broken card readers, and awkward change-making made every ride a minor ordeal.
  • The first Uber experience felt revolutionary simply because passengers could exit without any financial transaction, eliminating the most stressful part of the ride.
  • Ridesharing succeeded by breaking two core internet-era rules: sharing financial data with strangers and getting into cars with unknown drivers — and it worked anyway.

Summary

In this short conversational clip, two speakers — identified only as Lynn and an unnamed colleague — reflect on the friction-filled experience of taking traditional cabs before ridesharing apps like Uber transformed the industry. The exchange captures a relatable moment of nostalgia: scrambling for cash, hoping the card reader worked, and negotiating change with drivers. The turning point, one speaker recalls, was stepping out of their first Uber ride and simply walking away — no transaction, no awkward exchange. That seamless experience was so powerful it made them swear off traditional cabs entirely. The clip closes with a wry observation: ridesharing succeeded despite breaking two foundational internet-era rules — never share financial information with strangers online, and never get into a car with someone you don't know. The implicit message is that when convenience and trust are engineered correctly, even deeply ingrained behavioral norms can be overridden. For Nutanix, the analogy sets up a broader thought leadership theme: which entrenched industries or workflows are next in line for a similarly disruptive reinvention?

FAQ

What point is Nutanix making with this ridesharing story?

Nutanix uses the ridesharing analogy to illustrate how deeply entrenched friction and outdated norms can be disrupted when a better experience is engineered — implying that similar transformation is possible in enterprise technology.

What 'internet rules' did ridesharing break?

The speakers reference two widely held internet-era warnings: never share your financial information with strangers online, and never get into a car with someone you don't know. Ridesharing violated both — and became a global norm anyway.
