looking at robotics and automation and these things for replacing dangerous to human jobs, like we, I feel like we have less of those than we used to. Like, I mean, in the early, in the 1800s and the 1900s, there were certainly more dangerous jobs. We found safer ways to do things over the years and that kind of stuff. But I do think that there are enough jobs and responsibilities and things like that, that are dangerous, that those are the things that we should be looking at. And I do think, Sean, that for the time being, niche robots is where we have to stay until they can perfect the technology, until they can get to a place where the technology is good enough for that one job, that then they can start looking at implementing it into something else.

TL;DR

  • Robotics and automation should prioritize replacing jobs that are genuinely dangerous to human workers, not simply automating for efficiency's sake.
  • Society has already reduced many hazardous roles over the past two centuries, but enough dangerous work remains to justify targeted robotic solutions.
  • Niche, purpose-built robots are the right near-term approach — technology must be perfected for one job before expanding to broader applications.

Summary

This short clip from the SolarWinds TechPod podcast features a candid discussion on the appropriate role of robotics and automation in the modern workforce. The speaker argues that the most compelling use case for robots is not broad labor replacement but rather targeting jobs that remain genuinely dangerous to humans. While acknowledging that society has already eliminated many hazardous roles through safer practices and engineering improvements since the 1800s and 1900s, the speaker contends that enough dangerous responsibilities still exist to justify focused robotic deployment. A key strategic point is raised around the concept of niche specialization: rather than pursuing general-purpose robots, the argument is that technology must first be perfected for a single, well-defined dangerous task before expanding into adjacent applications. This incremental, use-case-first philosophy reflects a pragmatic view of where automation technology currently stands and where investment should be directed to deliver the most human benefit.

Key Quotes

0:03 "We should be looking at robotics and automation and these things for replacing dangerous to human jobs."
0:21 "We found safer ways to do things over the years and that kind of stuff."
0:32 "For the time being, niche robots is where we have to stay until they can perfect the technology."

FAQ

What types of jobs should robots be used for, according to this discussion?

The speaker argues robots should focus on jobs that are dangerous to humans — tasks where the risk to human workers is high enough to justify the investment in specialized automation technology.

Should robots be general-purpose or specialized right now?

The speaker believes niche, purpose-built robots are the right approach for the time being. The technology needs to be perfected for one specific job before it can be responsibly expanded to other applications.
