What actually changed? And mostly, why does it matter? The first thing I'm going to say is I don't think that what's changed is that attackers became interested in our environments. They already were. What changed is the speed at which the intelligence, automation, and exploitation that they have at their fingertips can be combined and utilized to execute attacks. So with Frontier AI, we're compressing a lot of things. One thing that Frontier AI is compressing is the time between discovery, weaponization, and action. And that matters because security programs were built around having a human-in-a-loop, human-speed assumptions, patching decisions that are made based on whether a vulnerability needs to be addressed today or can be addressed tomorrow. And the control gap white paper that we put out there really talks about what's coming, and that is that this time window is going to be incredibly compressed. So we're no longer going to be able to rely on those same assumptions.

TL;DR

  • Attackers' interest in enterprise environments hasn't changed — what's changed is the speed at which Frontier AI enables them to discover, weaponize, and exploit vulnerabilities.
  • Traditional security programs built on human-in-the-loop assumptions and daily patching cycles are increasingly misaligned with the pace of modern threats.
  • Forescout's Control Gap white paper argues that the time window between vulnerability discovery and active exploitation is being compressed to near-zero by AI-driven automation.

Summary

In this short-form clip, a Forescout spokesperson argues that the fundamental threat from attackers has not changed — adversaries have always targeted enterprise environments. What has changed dramatically is the speed at which they can operate. Frontier AI is compressing the timeline between vulnerability discovery, weaponization, and active exploitation, collapsing what was once a multi-day or multi-week window into something far shorter. Traditional security programs were designed around human-in-the-loop assumptions: patch decisions made on a daily or weekly cadence, with human analysts evaluating risk and prioritizing remediation. That model is now under pressure. Forescout's Control Gap white paper frames this acceleration as a structural challenge — one that demands a rethinking of how organizations approach vulnerability management and automated response. The core message is that security teams can no longer rely on the same timing assumptions that have underpinned their programs for years, and that understanding this shift is a prerequisite for building a defensible posture in an AI-accelerated threat landscape.

FAQ

What does Forescout mean by the 'control gap'?

The control gap refers to the widening mismatch between the speed at which AI-enabled attackers can discover and exploit vulnerabilities and the slower, human-paced processes that most security programs rely on for patching and response decisions.

Why is Frontier AI specifically a concern for vulnerability management?

Frontier AI compresses the time between vulnerability discovery, weaponization, and exploitation. Security programs built around human review cycles — deciding whether to patch today or tomorrow — cannot keep pace with automated attack chains that operate in near-real time.
