In this release, we are introducing an enhancement to the continuity feature standby image. This allows you to delay or schedule the initial VM creation once you add a device into a standby image plan. This helps to eliminate bottlenecks from restoring multiple machines simultaneously or to reduce resource conflicts. We're also introducing an automatic exclusion of the recovery location paths and executables inside of Windows Defender. This will help reduce the CPU, RAM, and disk I.O. impact during that initial and subsequent recoveries. Finally, we're introducing several small fixes or enhancements designed to help increase the success of being able to capture a screenshot after a successful recovery and booted system. For partners that are utilizing our M365 backup and recovery capabilities, we have improved the speed in which mailboxes are loading during the Exchange Restore Wizard. We have addressed an error related to processing attachments before the parent folder or container was restored. For our Linux partners, we now officially support additional Linux distributions and test on those distributions. Red Hat 789, CentOS 789, Debian 10.11.12, and Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 LTS are now among the supported distributions. We've added support for systemd as well as support for the latest 2.39 and 2.4 glibc versions. Finally, we improved the backup manager installation process and update experience with Linux in mind to help prevent errors and streamline that deployment. Also in 24.6, we did improve backup performance for Microsoft SQL server environments. We've optimized memory utilization during file and folder backups up to a factor of 15 in some cases. We've improved the default exclusion mechanism for files and folders and system state backups to help reduce the frequency of backup errors when coming across files that are open or in use or locked by applications such as Sentinel One. That's it for the 24.6 update. Check back regularly as we release new versions. Thanks. you

TL;DR

  • MSPs can now schedule Standby Image first restores to avoid resource conflicts when adding multiple machines, enabling overnight or weekend processing.
  • Automated Microsoft Defender exclusions for recovery locations resolve the performance bottleneck that caused 90% of slow restore complaints.
  • Expanded Linux support now includes Red Hat 7-9, CentOS 7-9, Debian 10-12, and Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 LTS with systemd and latest glibc compatibility.

Summary

N-able's Cove Data Protection 24.6 release introduces several partner-requested enhancements focused on improving restore performance and operational flexibility. The headline feature allows MSPs to schedule initial Standby Image VM creation, eliminating resource contention when onboarding multiple devices simultaneously. The update also automates Microsoft Defender exclusions for recovery locations, addressing a common cause of slow restore speeds that affected 90% of reported performance issues. Additional improvements span M365 backup capabilities with faster Exchange mailbox loading, expanded Linux distribution support including Red Hat, CentOS, Debian, and Ubuntu LTS versions, and optimized SQL Server backup performance with up to 15x better memory utilization. The release demonstrates N-able's focus on reducing friction in MSP workflows while expanding platform compatibility across enterprise workloads.

FAQ

Why would I want to schedule Standby Image first restores instead of running them immediately?

Scheduling allows you to avoid resource contention when adding multiple machines to a recovery plan. You can run initial VM creation overnight or on weekends when system resources are less constrained, preventing bottlenecks during business hours.

What Linux distributions are now officially supported in Cove 24.6?

The release adds official support for Red Hat 7, 8, and 9, CentOS 7, 8, and 9, Debian 10, 11, and 12, and Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 LTS. It also includes support for systemd and glibc versions 2.39 and 2.4.
