First, go to Sangfor Checks, then navigate to the Advanced section and locate the VMware Migration Assessment tool. Here is a brief introduction to the tool. The tool is designed for fast and convenient evaluation of migration from VMware to Sangfor HCI. Let's create a new project. To forecast future capacity, we'll enter the capacity growth rate and the number of years. To connect to VMware vSphere, we need to enter an account with read permissions. If we also want to convert VMware NSX firewall rules, we need to enter the NSX credentials. After connecting to VMware vSphere, we can view information about nodes, storage, and virtual machines on the vSphere platform. The formal evaluation process will now begin. The tool will assess various aspects, including migration method, virtual machine configuration and resources, platform configuration, virtual machine compatibility, and migration risk. The assessment was completed quickly and we can now download the assessment report. The report includes an Excel file summarizing the overall assessment results, giving us a comprehensive overview of this VMware migration. There is also an Excel document that tracks the status of each virtual machine, including basic information, configuration, risks, migration methods, recommendations, and more. If you need a more formal assessment document, the tool can automatically generate a Word version of the assessment report, allowing us to better define policies and prepare reports.

TL;DR

  • Sangfor's VMware Migration Assessment Tool automates the evaluation process for migrating from VMware vSphere to Sangfor HCI, assessing seven critical dimensions including migration methods, risks, compatibility, and resource requirements.
  • The tool connects to vSphere with read-only credentials and optionally to VMware NSX for firewall rule conversion, then automatically evaluates infrastructure and generates comprehensive migration reports.
  • Assessment output includes Excel files tracking individual VM status and migration parameters, plus automatically generated Word documents for formal documentation and executive presentation.

Summary

This tutorial demonstrates Sangfor's VMware Migration Assessment Tool, an automated platform designed to streamline the evaluation process for organizations migrating from VMware vSphere to Sangfor HCI. The tool replaces manual assessment workflows with an automated, rule-based engine that evaluates seven critical dimensions including migration method matching, risk identification, resource estimation, compatibility validation, migration sequencing, duration forecasting, and configuration mapping. The demonstration walks through the complete workflow from initial project setup and vSphere connection through automated assessment execution and report generation. The tool connects directly to VMware vSphere using read-only credentials, optionally integrates with VMware NSX for firewall rule conversion, and can assess 1,000+ VMs in approximately 10 minutes—representing a claimed 90% efficiency improvement over manual survey methods. Output includes both Excel spreadsheets tracking individual VM status and migration parameters, plus automatically generated Word documents suitable for formal assessment documentation and executive reporting.

FAQ

What credentials are required to run the Sangfor VMware Migration Assessment Tool?

The tool requires a VMware vSphere account with read permissions to access and assess the environment. If you also want to convert VMware NSX firewall rules as part of the migration assessment, you'll need to provide NSX credentials as well.

What types of reports does the assessment tool generate?

The tool generates two types of reports: Excel files that provide detailed tracking of individual VM status including configuration, risks, migration methods, and recommendations; and automatically generated Word documents that serve as formal assessment reports suitable for policy definition and executive presentation.
