What I'm getting ready to demonstrate for you is a component of OpenShift called DevSpaces that will allow you in less than two minutes provision a fully functional developer environment that is crafted for a particular type of work or project. What you're seeing here is an operator installed in our OpenShift ecosystem called OpenShift DevSpaces. You can see I'm logging in now as a non-privileged user and what I'm going to do is I'm going to provision a new workspace by just clicking on that little icon that you saw real quick go by in my GitHub repository. What's happening right now is it's as though as a developer I were able to go and pull off of a bookshelf a laptop that was already configured to do the work that I need to do on this particular application. It's cloning all of the code. It's pulling a container that has all of my developer tooling in it including the dependencies that I need for this particular project. It's also going to provision a Postgres database that is already configured to be integrated with this application. If you think about the amount of hidden toil that would exist if I were trying to replicate all of this on my local workstation what has happened here is where I might have spent an entire day two days, three days, maybe even a week if I had to wait for a ServiceNow request instead in less than two minutes while I was talking to you this workspace has provisioned, installed all of the extensions that I need to do the work cloned all of the code and I'm now able to make the changes to the application that I need to make and even run the application. If I click this little play button here you'll see down in the bottom of my screen it's actually doing a build and a deployment of this microservice in live developer mode so that I can make code changes and see the results of those code changes live. And then when I'm done and I've made the changes and I've created my pull request in Git and I no longer need this workspace I can either stop it and give all those resources back to the cloud or I can delete it if I don't need it for a while knowing that in less than two minutes I can have the exact same developer environment back and up and running and it doesn't matter if I have the right stuff on this workstation because all I need is a browser. I hope you enjoyed that short little demo. I want to cover one more thing and point out that what I'm showing you here is running on the infrastructure you see in front of you. This is a fully functional data center that is running air gapped, no internet connectivity. So your developer environments don't have to have internet access or even an external cloud provider for you to serve full developer environments. If you're interested in this and want to learn more there's a link at the bottom please click it and follow up with us.

TL;DR

  • OpenShift Dev Spaces provisions fully configured developer workspaces in under two minutes, eliminating days or weeks of manual setup time and service request delays.
  • The system automatically clones code, pulls pre-configured containers with dependencies, integrates databases like Postgres, and deploys microservices in live developer mode.
  • Workspaces run entirely browser-based and can operate in air-gapped data centers without internet connectivity, making them suitable for secure enterprise environments.

Summary

This technical demonstration showcases Red Hat OpenShift Dev Spaces, a developer environment automation tool that eliminates the traditional setup overhead associated with configuring local workstations. The demo illustrates how developers can provision fully functional, project-specific workspaces in under two minutes directly from a browser, replacing what typically requires days or weeks of manual configuration and service requests. The system automatically handles code cloning, container provisioning with pre-configured dependencies, database integration, and microservice deployment in live developer mode. Notably, the entire demonstration runs in an air-gapped data center environment with no external internet connectivity, demonstrating the solution's viability for secure enterprise deployments. The workspace lifecycle is fully managed, allowing developers to stop or delete environments when not needed and recreate them instantly, with all resources returned to the cloud infrastructure.
