As of Zerto 9.0 VMs can be automatically protected in VMware using vSphere native tags. Zerto VM Auto protect function helps eliminate manual processes and ensures infrastructure and operations teams can easily protect servers as they're deployed. Vm Auto Protect adds a new way to create and edit virtual protection groups, but manual creation via GUI or API is also still available and used in versions prior to Zerto 9.0. Note that because VM Auto Protect relies on vSphere tags, it is not currently available for Hyper-V, Azure, AWS or other non VMware platforms. To get started with VM Auto protect, enable the option in site settings and ensure at least one VPG definition exists to serve as a template. More than one template can exist in order to leverage different protection settings, for example, different recovery site or data store. But keep in mind for new CPGs, every setting will be copied and applied exactly as it is in the template. Within the vSphere client. Create a tag using the name of the pkg that will be used for VMs with this tag. Tags should be in the Zerto Protection automation category that is automatically created during a Zerto for VMware installation. Multiple templates can exist and thus multiple vSphere tags to ensure VMs can be auto protected with the exact configuration needed. Zerto monitors those tags every ten minutes and creates or updates epgs if any new tags were applied since last check ten minutes ago. If more than one tag is applied to the same VM and both tags map to valid VPG templates, the VM will not be automatically protected until the duplication is fixed. For this and other auto protect issues, Zerto will attempt VPG creation three times before stopping and triggering an alert so that the issue can be investigated. Once successful and automatically protected, VM sits in a typical VPC and behaves just as it would if the VPG was created individually via the gooey workflow or via API. To prevent accidental deletions and inadvertent gaps in protection, a previously tagged VM that has its tag removed will not automatically be removed from its VPG.
Zerto Virtual Replication with vSphere is a one-click, automated process that allows you to protect your servers and applications from any datacenter disruption—whether during a planned migration or an unplanned outage. Using vSphere's native tags, Zerto will automatically recognize every virtual machine in your environment as it needs protection using existing templates—dramatically simplifying configuration and allowing you to easily unlock backup, disaster recovery and long-term retention for all your virtualized servers.
