The Geostationary Lightning Mapper is the first instrument to continually monitor lightning from space. The instrument, built by Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, shows impressive detail of lightning strikes across the Americas. This leads to better, earlier warning of severe weather. The first GLM is aboard the inaugural Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-16). The data shown here was captured April 28, 2017
